Four
"Um," I ventured, in the way of a person who doesn't really want to know the answer to her question. "Who's Asher?"
"Oh this guy who tries to kill people," Simon waved his hands dismissively.
"So I guess he fits right in around here," I glanced at Blade.
Blade glared at me.
"We should stop him." Finn yawned.
"Yeah," Simon scratched the back of his neck.
"I love how they leap into action around here," I said to no one in particular.
Blade growled. "It's that bastard again!" He brought out his gun. "He'll pay."
"Oh what? With his American Express? You can't take on a vampire!" I scoffed. "I mean- I've read Twilight- come on! A human can't kill a vampire...also they sparkle."
"Watch me," Blade stormed past and slammed into the building.
There was a pause.
"They don't sparkle," Said Finn, who seemed to be just catching on.
Simon prodded me forward. "Go on."
I took a step back. "Sorry?"
"Go help Blade control the vampires."
"Oh sure, I always wanted to die a horrible death."
"It's your legacy."
"I'm sure Blade can handle this."
Simon sighed. "University." He said plainly.
I stared at him.
Then I turned and walked into the school.
At first it was just a long black-marble hallway, completely deserted.
I closed the door behind me and took a step forward.
Well, I was definitely alive for longer than I thought I'd be.
Then I squealed in terror as something crashed to the ground.
I leapt out of the way of the falling debris and scuttled behind a corner, putting my hands over my ears and closing my eyes tightly.
I waited a few seconds, then peered round the edge.
It was a chunk of a flight of marble stairs, obviously broken away by some inhuman force.
I gawped at it, then swallowed.
Screw university- I probably wouldn't even LIVE that long if I didn't get out of here soon.
I ran for the door and screamed as something broke from the shadows and almost toppled into me.
"AHHH!" I screamed.
"Ella- it's okay, it's just me." Blade said.
"AHHH!"
"Quiet! I won't try to kill you!"
"Thanks awfully." I muttered, regaining my breath and my sarcasm.
Another figure landed gracefully from the upper levels of the school, as fast as a gunshot.
I stared at him.
I knew he was a vampire because all vampires are supposed to be ridiculously good-looking.
Would it be cliché to say that this guy fitted the bill?
Tall, dressed in black jeans and a striped top, hair so blonde that it was almost white with darker tones of gold to it.
And oh my sweet Lord, his eyes!
Misty silver, wrapped around his pupils like silk, getting darker towards the edges.
For a second all a teenage girl like myself could do was stand there and ogle.
Then he spoke words which ruined it for me:
"Who's the new blood?" He grinned and his mouth opened to reveal symmetrical fangs.
Okay, not so star-struck now...
"She's our new hunter," Said Blade, almost reluctantly.
The vampire laughed. "Recruiting Girl Scouts now? The school's budget must be hard-up."
"I was never IN the Girl Scouts!" Was my witty, stinging comeback.
"She's a descendant of Hellsing." Blade said.
The vampire prowled forward. "She must taste delicious."
I gulped. "W-who me? No, no, no! Actually, I've been told on many accounts that I have quite a bitter aftertaste."
"And she's a little smartass." The vampire smiled. "How cute."
I poked Blade. "Yeah, you can kill him now, Mr. Vampire Hunter."
"We're not allowed to kill the students," Blade muttered bitterly. "Only injure them if they make trouble."
"How badass you vampire hunters are." I remarked.
"Not the time, Ella!"
"Ah, Ella!" The vampire's eyes lit up. "I like knowing the name of my prey."
"Blade!" I poked him harder. "Injure!"
Blade sighed and pushed me to one side. "You're useless." He muttered, then looked at the vampire. "I told you what I'd do to you if you made trouble again, Asher!"
Oh, so THAT was Asher!
I looked back at the vampire, who was sneering.
"And I was very scared." He assured Blade. "Honest."
Blade pointed the gun towards him. "If it weren't for the school rules, I'd be aiming this at your heart."
"System's a bitch, ain't it?"
"SHUT UP!"
Asher's eyes glittered. "Make me."
Before Blade could react, a door opened somewhere and a beautiful girl came down the stairs towards them.
She had this perfect long auburn hair let loose around her shoulders and pure blue eyes, she was wearing a short skirt showing off her amazing legs and her school blazer didn't hide the fact that she had the kind of body men fantasise about.
You know...one of those girls you just want to kill.
"Ashy," She sighed in a lucid voice. "You'll stress yourself out, baby."
Asher grinned and glanced at her. "I thought you were waiting in my room, Irie."
"I wanted to see what all the fuss was about." She passed her eyes over Blade and giggled. "Poor little human."
Blade's eyes flashed. "You scum- you're a disgrace to this school!"
"Oh dear," Irie rolled her eyes and they came to rest on me. She raised an eyebrow. "And who are you?"
"Uh...I'm Ella Lawlette," I shuffled. "I'm kinda...new."
"Oh sweet," Irie smiled, glancing at Asher. "Another appetiser for my Ashy."
"She's a Hellsing." Asher commented.
"No!" Irie stared at me. "Really? Oh how cute!"
I twitched in irritation. I may not be brave, but I'm also not very smart.
"Shut up." I snapped.
They all looked at me.
Had I just told a vampire to shut up?
"I'll have you know that I'm a descendant of Abraham Hellsing! You know what that means, Fang-face? That means I'm gonna kick all of your asses so you had better start cleaning up your act, get it?"
The hall went as quiet as death.
And speaking of death, I think I might have just found it.
