Chapter 10

I glanced over at Jacklynn and saw her looking at me. She looked down as soon as our eyes met.

"What?" I asked a little self-consciously. I'm guessing she wanted to talk about my little experiment with water.

She let loose a long breath and looked at me. "Promise me you won't get mad at me?" She looked so sad. She reminded me of Culprit when I put her in the box.

I gave her a kind smile. "Of course I won't get mad," I promised her. I stifled a yawn before turning fully on my side to face her. My body felt renewed after my little experiment with the water. It wasn't fully back to normal though. I ached whenever I moved and I could still tell I was running a low grade fever but nothing a little sleep couldn't get rid of.

Jacklynn glanced at me hopefully. "Well, I was wondering if-"she looked back down at her thumbs as she twisted them together in an attempt to subside her nervousness.

"If I would do what?" I asked a little intrigued.

She took in a deep breath and looked at me again. "I was wondering if you could teach me how to do that thing with water?" I was truly shocked. Apparently, though, she read it wrong. "I don't mean to be a bother and if I am being one... You know what? Never mind, just forget that I even said anything!" Jacklynn said as she fumbled with her covers.

I started laughing at her and she stopped in the midst of her wresting with the sheets. She gave me an odd look. I slowed my breathing because it was making my body hurt so badly. I took a deep breath and looked over at her. "Was that really your question?" Jacklynn looked down at her hands again guiltily.

"Ya, it was. But you don't need to do anything like that. I mean, sure, I would love it if you would but-"I cut her off as she looked at me so sad. What did she think I was going to do to her? Tell her to leave me alone? No I could never do that to a friend.

"I'll try to teach you, okay?" I gave her a kind smile and her face lit up.

"Oh, you're the best Dae! You're the best friend anyone could have! I-"I cut her off again.

"But-"her face instantly dropped, "you have to wait till the end of next week. You know after initiation," she smile again and slipped under her covers.

"Thank you!" she said excitedly.

"No problem, but I can't promise you I'll be able to teach you," she nodded. I leaned over and blew out the small candle. The smoke trailed up into the top of the room as the bright moon shined in through the blue curtains. I looked at the moon and remembered a time before all of this. Before I knew this school was abnormal. Before I lived with other families but get sent back almost immediately. Before I even knew what a foster home was; the time when I still had my real parents. I remember how we used to lay out on the roof with blankets and just watch the stars twinkle in the heaven above us.

Flashback

"Do you see that one?" my dad asked me as I lay against the hard roof under a warm blanket looking up at the stars. The stars were amazing tonight. You see, living in the country you actually get to see the stars.

"Which one are you looking at?" I asked while looking at the horizon as the last fading glow of the sun subsided.

"I'm pointing at the bright one of course."

"Dad, they're all bright!" I said as I snuggled my seven year old body closer to him. My laugh sounded across the empty space before my dad jumped in laughing with his deep throaty laugh. Even my mom's bell like laughter sounded in the middle of it.

Dad grabbed my hand and pointed it in the right direction. "Oh, I see it now!" I said excitedly. Whenever dad pointed at a specific star there was always a story with it.

"Do you know what's it called?" I shook my head no. I looked up at him to see his brown eyes smiling down at me. "Its call Polaris or the North Star. Supposedly, with the help of that star, you can find your way to almost anywhere."

"Even to heaven?" I asked looking at him with a serious expression.

"If you try hard enough, yes," my mom spoke up to my left. I looked over at her with curious eyes.

"So, let's say something happened to you, or to me. If I or you tried hard enough, would we find each other again?" I asked in a serious voice. My dad and my mom looked at each other weirdly. The expression was full of love, understanding, and compassion but somehow it still held fear, sorrow, and loss.

"If you try hard enough-"my dad started but my mom finished.

"-anything is possible. If you we were to die, honey, we would try anything-"it was my dad's turn to finish this time.

"- we would try everything to get a message back to you. If you are to look at the North Star and think of us with all of your might you're sure to get some type of message," he said as my eyelids drooped till they finally closed.

I leaned on top my mom and snuggled into her side and sighed with relief as I felt sleep within a few seconds away from me. I felt lips go on top of my head. "Sleep well my darling."

Another set a lips kissed my forehead. "Don't worry about us. Get to sleep now, sweet dreams my beautiful Dae." The last thing I saw was a shooting star. I wish with all of my might that this would never change. Too bad wishes never really work.

End of Flashback

I had tears prickling in the corners of my eyes. I drew in a raggedy breath and tried to calm myself. "So you're water element too?" I asked Jacklynn but she was already snoring softly. I chuckled at her and turned onto my other side and closed my eyes willing my pain to go away, both physical and mental. When my parents died I had wished with all of my might on every shooting star I saw. I wished that I would wake up from this nightmare.

I also prayed to the North Star. I was determined to get that message from my parents, but nothing came. After a year of doing that, I gave up. I even think I went into depression but nobody really cared. I was a family less kid who didn't want anything to do with anybody else. When my parents died, police tried tracking down some of my other relatives but they could never find any. So, I was stuck in a foster home. I couldn't have cared less back then. I was so engrossed with the message I thought I'd get from my parents I didn't even know what my surroundings were.

"Why did have to lie to me mommy and daddy?" I asked in a whisper as I stared at the North Star. My eyes drooped as my head filled with the sweet memories of my parents. Before I knew it, I was out cold.
