Chapter 3: The Plan

"POTTER!! BLACK!! I AM GOING TO KILL YOU IN YOUR SLEEP WHEN I GET MY HANDS ON YOU!!!" The entire common room could hear Abellina from her dorm and any questions about the source of the noise were soon answered when she ran down the stairs with feathers sprouting from her body and wings for arms so she couldn't even hold a wand. Her legs were thin and spindly, covered in tough yellow scales with claws. In short- she looked like chicken.
"Damnnit- I knew something went wrong! She was supposed to squawk." James sighed in a mixture of defeat and amusement before noticing that her eyes had landed on him and visibly gulping so that his adam's apple bobbed as he broke out in a sweat. He looked over to his side where Sirius was supposed to be only to notice that he'd already hidden and- just as Abellina began to make her way towards him with fury in her eyes he bolted for the door, trying to get down to the Great Hall in the hope that she wouldn't follow him. Many students looked at him funny as he sprinted through the corridors, nervously looking behind him- each time expecting to see a very angry and oversized bird following him. Finally, after making it to the Hall and confirming that she wasn't following him he sighed, collapsing on a bench and out of breath. 10 minutes into his breakfast he felt someone come up behind him and practically cowered in his seat when he saw standing over him, hands on her hips and her eyes alight with anger, her whole body was shaking and especially for someone as short as her she looked absolutely terrifying. She'd managed to sort ot the...uh...feather situation and was dressed in muggle clothing that Sirius (who was watching from what was considered to be a safe distance) was almost certain her parents would disapprove of- especially the fact that she'd charmed her hair a light shade of pink. The shadow that her cap cast on her face made her look even more ominous to James who attempted a weak smile and tried to spit out a laugh...It sounded more like a whimper.
"I guess you were just too chicken to chase me." He tried weakly, hoping he could make her laugh and it would all be forgotten about but instead, her eyes narrowed even further and her lips became a thin, almost invisible line. She looked as if she were about to slap him- actually, he wouldn't be surprised if she was.
"Shut the fuck up Potter" Her voice was stone cold, a tone he hadn't heard from his mother even when she was most angry and Abellina was fuming, her whole body was tensed and her cheeks had a light red shade to them underneath her makeup. The whole hall fell silent as she spoke, chills running down everyone's spine as though they had just been doused in cold water. None of the Professors even dared to speak for fear that she'd turn on them.
"I-I'm so...so s-sorry-"
"Save it Potter" Her voice cut through the silence like a knife and James visibly winced as though she had just cut him...actually, he wished she had. Anything was better than this cold anger. Without even thinking about it she reached up her hand, striking him across the face so hard that it echoed across the whole room and James sat in a stunned silence, his cheek just beginning to sting viciously but his eyes fixed on the girl in front of him who turned around sharply on the spot, her hair flying out behind her and exited the hall, grabbing an apple and a letter addressed to her on her way as she left everyone absolutely transfixed.
"Alright everyone, shows over," Sirius said tiredly but it was so quiet that even the Slytherins who were sitting furthest away could hear him. The hall was soon filled with whispers which slowly turned back into the loud conversations of before.
Later that day in the common room Abellina was attempting to finish a particularly vicious essay for Arithmancy which she was having to cross-reference everything in three textbooks to fully understand, one of these books was actually in French as it was an old one from when she'd lived in France with her father and had attended Beauxbatons. With her Father... The pain stabbed at her chest just like it had the first time she'd grieved. It had only happened six months ago, she was just about to return to school after Easter and he'd left. He was always leaving and would come back with mysterious cuts and bruises but there was something different about it this time. Just a subtle glimmer in his eyes or the way he held on just a little too tightly when he hugged her. He had only died six months ago and aside from the initial greif, she hadn't even thought about him. Everything had been so busy and she'd just thrown herself into all of it- it almost felt disrespectful. She caught Abraxus's letter from the corner of her eye and sighed, picking it up and preparing to break the seal- bracing herself for whatever lay within. She needed a distraction- it still hurt just too much to think about him. Of how she should've stopped him going or even gone with him. Finally deciding to stop wallowing in her pitiful misery she bagan to open the letter but just as she was about to pull the thin peice of parchment from the envelope she saw the copy of the 'Daily Prophet' that a 3rd year was reading on the sofa next to her. Abellina snatched it up without a second thought.
