Chapter five: Werewolves

September 20th, 1975

features relaxed as she slipped out of the castle doors. Just that day she'd discovered that her father was a Death Eater. She'd been writing Dorea Potter for about a week and- after going through the files from the Order of the Pheonix she had come to Abellina with the information that her father had been fighting against them in as part of a counter-attack on Riddle Manor- a place Dumbledore believed could be the Death Eater headquarters. There were hundreds of casualties on the side of the Death Eaters and a few from the Order as well. When they had recovered his body it was almost unidentifiable- destroyed by fire and mutilated by they had been able to retrieve a signet ring. Abraxus had only known he was dead because he had also fought in that raid- there was almost no official inquiry as to the circumstances. It was only recently that the Order had given their files to the Ministry and it was discovered whose the signet ring was.

This left her completely lost- she loved her father, he was always gentle and loving but he had murdered and tortured people who didn't deserve it. All her life she had wanted to follow in his footsteps- work for Gringotts, live in the family palace, marry well. It was the dream at Beauxbatons and amongst her wealthy, pureblood friends. Now she didn't know what to do. All her life she'd been told what she was supposed to do- how to act and how to think- never once realising that she didn't want any of it. For the first time in months she allowed herself to grieve for him. She had been very young when she'd lost her mother and had relied on her father her whole life making his death so much harder on her.

Abellina shivered in the cold as she looked out over the lake- water was moving in little ripples and the moonlight shone off it, illuminating the murky depths. He'd always loved the water- when she was younger he had taken her out to the lake around the back of their garden and told her her favourite stories over and over again until she fell asleep with a contented smile on her face and he would carry her back up to her room. She sat there for hours, tears running down her cheeks as she reminisced about the times they'd spent together... about how all of it was a lie. Her father was a Death Eater.

It was light by the time she realised that she needed to get up or she'd be caught outside. Her muscles ached and cramped from sitting in the cold at night but the fresh morning air and dewy grass was soothing as she snuck around the castle, sticking to the walls. Abellina breathed a sigh of relief when she saw the door- about to make a run for it and sprint inside but before she could she heard voices. Running to the nearest tree she hugged it, her foot in a rabbit hole as she peeked around to find who else was out. She let out an involuntary gasp as her eyes went wide and all the blood drained from her face. Standing only meters away was Sirius Black who was limping badly and being supported on either side by Peter and James. James was levitating an unconscious Remus through the air on a stretcher he'd conjured. Remus's skin looked stretched and pale- torn in several places. He had a grisly bruise on his temple that was oozing blood and pus whilst his stomach was rapidly convulsing, ruby liquid pouring out of it at an alarming state as he gasped and wheezed for breath. James looked over in her direction with tired but panicked eyes when he heard her gasp but she threw herself behind the tree. Abellina's whole body was shaking violently as she collapsed, hugging her knees and trying to register what she'd just seen. She could hear that they'd left but she stayed hidden for a few more minutes, only coming out when she was certain she wouldn't bump into them. Something had happened to them- something bad. All she wanted to do was swear and curse and scream at her father but right now that could wait- she'd only known them for a few weeks but they mattered to her like no one else did right now. They were her only friends and her only family. Say what you like about Abellina Avery but she would never let anyone hurt her family.
