Chapter 12: W.A.F.E.R.
22nd November, 1975
Abellina sat at the table, oblivious to her friends chatter, the five letters that she had received over the past two days spread out across her plate, the varying handwriting and ink hues glaring at her as if they were testing her, waiting for her to give in and open them. She wasn't sure which one was from who- only that they all contained answers of some kind or another. After a deep sigh she reached a pale arm for the furthest one which had deep indigo ink swirling across the page. The envelope was obviously expensive but she hardly lingered on this before ripping it open and scanning the bottom line to find the sender. Septimus. Of course, only the Malfoy's would use such flamboyant stationary. After scanning the contents she moved onto the next one until finally all five letters lay in a stack.
According to Rabastan then her father had died in a crossfire yet according to Bellatrix he had been fleeing the fight when he was cornered and killed by an unknown order member. Abellina was aware that Bellatrix was lying as Dumbledore had already confirmed that no one in the order had murdered her father and whilst Rabastan was possibly truthful the stories didn't match which made her slightly apprehensive. However, Bellatrix had mentioned that she was to visit the Manor over christmas and eager to meet with her to discuss her future as a death eater.
Sybil Carrow merely attested that her father loved her but Septimus was possibly the most helpful. Agreeing to buy her a place in the wizengamot and through blackmail which, after reading Harold Minchums letter which stated that due to suspicion surrounding her father then she wasn't welcome in the Wizengamot, would be particularly useful.
"Hey, Avery. Look, I know we argued a few days ago but... Can I talk to you? In private?" James asked, swaggering over without his usual mask of arrogance and running a hand through his hair.
"Sure." She replied evenly, stashing the letters in her bag before following him from the room.
"Please don't tell Sirius about what I said." He rushed out as soon as they were alone in a secluded alcove.
"Why not?"
"He doesn't want people to know- he thinks it makes him weak. Besides, you don't like him a-"
"I do too! Just because he is an arrogant, conceited womanizer it does not mean I don't like him." She squealed, screwing up her face in frustration so that red flushed her cheeks. James raised an eyebrow in such a way that she momentarily forgot she was mad at him and had to fight back a laugh.
"Whatever you say. Look, my parents are hosting a huge christmas thing and I was wondering if you'd like to come?" For once he looked nervous, shuffling from foot to foot as he shoved his glasses up his nose with slightly shaking hands. "With me...I mean. Just friends of course." He rushed to get out, almost jumping over his words so that Abellina had to pause for a moment to decipher what he'd just said.
"Uuhhh, yeah, sure." For some reason a small part of her sagged at this, tears welling up behind her eyes before she pulled herself together with a shake of her head. "But if this is just because you think i'm being abused th-"
"No, it's not. I believe you and I realise that I was just being prejudice."
"Big word for Mr Potter!" Abellina gasped in amusement, clapping her hands excitedly.
"Just because you don't think i'm capable of understanding the english language it doesn't m-"
"Doesn't mean you're a butt head? Uh, I think it does hun."
