As I leave the room, I am blushing. Which is crazy because I've never blushed in my life. Until I met Niomi.
"Mate, saw you talking to that blonde gal" Matt says as we walk to English. I grin and look down, trying to hide the nervousness in my voice... So I don't know why I'm hiding my face instead.
"Yeah, she's called Niomi. I like her" I say, stopping to take a sip from the water fountain.
"Be careful dude. She looked pretty and stuff, but she also looked quite...." Matt sighs and looks down. He's struggling for words, I can tell.
I wipe my mouth with my hand and say, "dude, it's me. Tell me!"
"She looked unpopular" Matt says quietly. Silence. I don't know what to say, because he's right. I can tell. Matt knows every living student in this school, and all the teachers. It's crazy but true and I hate to say it but, Niomi doesn't look like she has that many friends.
"Look, all I'm saying is be careful. If you really like her, risk it" Matt says as we continue walking. "But remember your popularity. It's key. Everyone likes you and do you wanna ruin that for some girl who you will find out she isn't the one?! Nah, none of that. You will lose everything."
I stay silence until I think of something. "Will I lose you and the mates?" I ask. Matt doesn't answer for a while and then says, "the others, probably. Me, probably... Not. If you start wearing geeky glasses and bows, yeah, your a goner." Matt nudges me and grins. I smile as we walk into English.
Matt's a good mate. He's my best mate. And he gets when I really like someone and supports me. A lot more than the others.

As I walk through the fields, I see Niomi sitting on the bench, reading. I feel like going to hug her but I play it cool.
"Hey, Niomi" I say causally. She looks up and grins. "Marcus."
"You don't sit a loner all the time, do you? Because that's messed up" I joke, sitting next to her.
"My friend isn't in. I'm not that sad" she laughs. I grin. "Thank god!" Then I look at the book she's reading. Science, KS4 Revision Booklet. What the hell.
"This looks boring, for a book" I comment.
"It's revision, Marcus. I have a test tomorrow and I gotta do well" Niomi says, looking at it happily.
"I never revise. They aren't the actual GCSEs. I'll do a day revision, but that's it. I dint wait around for stupid tests. What if a bomb hits, and all that work, for nothing?" I say, looking into her eyes.
"Then you'll die in vain" Niomi finishes.
"Vain? What does that mean?"
"You idiot." We both laugh. "I actually don't know myself.." Niomi grins. I playfully nudge her.
"K, well. If you gonna revise, I guess I'm joining in" I say. I pat her bag. "Got another Science revision boring book with you?"
"No, sorry, only this one" Niomi says. "We can go to the library, get you one though. I'll come."
"I don't have a library card, Nimbob."
"Nimbob?!" She looks horrified.
I laugh. "Yeah Nimbob. You gotta love Nimbob, I'm keeping it if you don't anyway so save yourself."
"Fine! And everyone has a library card... Marky!" I laugh at Marky. "I wasn't in when they gave you guys them."
Niomi sighs. "You can use mine." She gets up and starts walking.
I sigh. Now or never big guy.
"Nimbobs, can I have your number? To hang out and stuff?" I don't look at her because I know I'll cry if I do, my fists clenched. I hear nothing. Crap she's gone. Marcus you idiot your ideal woman is gone, well done!
Suddenly a piece of paper falls on my lap. I look at it:
532 3445 3455 - Nimbobs xo
"Should have asked earlier!" Niomi says sneakily and hops away. I grin as I get up. That woman is going to make me fight harder than I ever have before.
