As we walk to pizza express, I keep bursting into laughter at random times. The way Marcus fell off the swing was too funny.
When I laugh for the hundredth time, Marcus says, "your a freaking mean friend!" Funny enough, this makes me laugh even more.
"I'm sorrryyyy, Marky! But you didn't see yourself when you... When you..." I splutter and then I start laughing again.
"The pain was real!" Marcus complains and I shift a giggle. When we get there, it wasn't very busy like they said it would be. We go up to the counter and I say very clearly, "table for two?"
The waitress nods, smiling and leads us to a table by the window. "Thanks" I say as we sit down. "I'll bring the menus" says the waitress.
I look at Marcus, who's looking at me in the same way. I know what he's thinking which is weird.
"Oh we know what we what" I say. "I'll have a coke and a ham, pineapple and cheese pizza."
The waitress nods. "You?" She asks Marcus.
"I'll have a salad with a mushroom, pineapple and tomato pizza, with a sprite. In the can" Marcus says.
"Okay, ten minutes" the lady confirms and walks away. I look around and see all different kinds of people. Kids, teenagers, elderly.
Marcus laughs to himself quietly. I turn back to face him. "What?" I ask. He shakes his head, grinning. I narrow my eyes at him. What is he laughing about? And why not tell me?
"Cmon!" I say. "Tell me!"
"You won't like it" Marcus says hastily. I swear at him.
"Alright! This is like a date" Marcus says. "Don't get angry" he adds. I stare at him for a while. Why is he always bringing this up? He clearly doesn't like me that way. I mean, he would have said if he did. So what's he bringing this up for?
"Are you going to tease me about liking you? Because I don't anymore, it was just a faze" I comment, looking down. I hate lying because I go red. When I don't feel as red and blushy (not a word ha) I will look up.
When I look up, for a moment, I think Marcus's face drops, but then he smiles. "Good, no weird problems then" he says as the lady brings our drinks. She smiles and says our food will be ready in five minutes, then she leaves.
"Question" Marcus says as I take a sip. "When you did like me... Why?" I laugh and take another sip.
"This will make me blush Marky, go away!" I moan. Marcus raises his eyebrows but his eyes are boring into mine, like he is demanding the answer.
I sigh. "You were good looking and I don't know. You seemed... Different. But it's fine. I don't feel that way, your a bestfriend now."
Marcus coughs. "Are you saying I'm not good looking and different anymore?" He says sternly though I can tell by the hint of sarcasm in his voice.
"Of course not! Your the same, just different..." I drift away. "Ugh, I can't explain it" I say, whacking a hand in the air, lazily.
"I'll live with same but different" Marcus says smiling and I laugh.
"Your a great bestfriend though, Marcus. Can we just leave it at that?" I ask. Marcus nods.
"Just gonna go to the loo" Marcus says as he hops up and walks away. I check my make up and then sigh to myself. I only said that to save myself. I've friend zoned myself and I'm glad. I can't hurt myself anymore. Maybe I'll get over Marcus quicker than I thought.
Now that I know it will never happen. I just hope Marcus doesn't get a girlfriend anytime soon. I don't know how I'll handle it. If I'll handle it well.
The lady comes and brings the pizzas. "Thanks" I say as she places them down. Mine is huge, and Marcus's even bigger, but he's a man.
"You know they guy your with? Is it a date?' The waitress asks. I look at her and she's blushing bright red and looks embarrassed. Crap.
I can't tell her that Marcus is free because I want him.
No Niomi! You can't keep him away from girls forever! Do the right thing. I hate when my brain or inside self is right.
"He's free. I'll tell him your interested" I mumble, staring into space. I did the right thing. "Thanks!" The lady smiles and leaves.
Marcus walks back. "Ooooh!" He grins and stuffs his mouth with pizza. He looks at me staring.
"What?" He says, his mouth full.
"Waitress over the there is interested" I say, trying to act like I don't care. When I really did.
He is silent for a minute and then says, "I'll talk to her after, thanks Nimbobs!" I smile at him. He's so blind though. It's a fake smile.
What I'm asking myself: how come the right thing feels so wrong?
