narrator povIT WAS A SATURDAY NIGHT AND MACKENZIE WAS BORED. Brynn was on a date with her boyfriend, so she decided to text her next closest friend: Hayden. after she got off her phone, she changed her pijamas into some sweats and a tank top, taking a jacket with her.
"okay, 48 has got to be that way, right" she said trying to find where to go. truth is, she still didn't know the school that well, it was only her first week. so she was always lost. to say the least. she started walking and saw the room numbers getting smaller must be in the right way then. after a while, she finally found room 48. she knocked on the door and seconds later was met with a boy with very messy curly hair.
"see, you didn't get lost" he said while stepping aside to let her in. she slapped him lightly and he chuckled. when she got in she realized it was her first time in his room. it was exactly like her and Brynn's, only it was decorated differently. actually, you could barely say it was decorated. "here, this is my side" he said while laying on the bed and reaching for his laptop. Mackenzie laid next to him. "netflix?" he asked "sure".
Hayden was very focused on picking a movie while the girl next to him was still trying to absorb the place. he finally choose their go to Big Hero 6. Mackenzie's favorite. they got comfy while the movie didn't start. Hayden lifted up his arm so Mackenzie could lean on him, and she did. she put her head on his chest and he put his arms around her shoulder and they tangled their legs together putting a blanket over them. since they met watching movies became their thing. being dance partners and all, they were comfortable around each other. their touch was never in a romantic kind of way. they were best friends. and it was comforting to have the other one around. they were what you could call the touchy best friends. but there were no feelings. sure people thought the opposite, but they knew the truth.
some time in the movie, Mackenzie drifted, thinking about random things. "so, who is your roommate?" she asked while slightly looking up at him. they had seen that story a couple times together so they didn't mind talking through it. "oh, it's this guy that does dance and music. Asher. he is in our ballet class. i don't remember who his pas de deux is tho" he said nervously. why is he nervous? and where have i heard the name Asher? "oh, have i ever talked to him?" she questioned trying to put a face on the name. "don't think so. he has very green eyes. if you would've noticed something about him it would be that" he said. she still didn't remember him. "is he cool?" "yeah, we don't talk much because he hangs out with..." before he could finish he was interrupted by the door opening.
four teenagers came inside the room. one Kenzie assumed was Asher, the roommate. now the other three she didn't have a guess who they were and couldn't tell yet since their backs were facing the two friends. she looked at Hayden to see if he could give her some answers but all she saw was a very scared expression on his face. what's up with him? didn't he just say Asher was nice? it took a minute for the any of the other teenagers to identify the couple of friends in the room as they were engaged in an intense conversation. Asher was the first one to notice them. he turned around and saw the two snuggled up in the bed " oh hi Hayden, and..." he stopped not knowing Mackenzie's name.
after hearing Asher talk to somebody other then them, the others turned around too. just then Mackenzie saw that there were, other then Asher, two girls and a boy in the room. but not just any boy shit! i know where Asher is from now. "Mackenzie?" Johnny said shocked she was there. truth is, ever since their "fight", he had tried taking to the girl multiple times. only none of them were actually in public. he would come to her room, or wait for her in the music room, in the classroom where she would have her music lessons. he never got the hint that she wasn't going to be his secret. no matter how hard he tried or how much he bugged her, until he was ready to ditch his stupid rules, she wouldn't be friends with him.
Mackenzie immediately sat up on the bed, getting out of Hayden's comforting embrace, her eyes big. she looked at her best friend for help. the boy didn't think this would happen. sure, he knew Asher and Johnny were friends but they never hung out in his room and it was too much of a coincidence for him to be here right when Mackenzie, the girl who was so mad at him, was there too. "oh hi guys!" Hayden said feeling more awkward then ever. Asher and the two girls were very confused on how Johnny knew that girls name. she is not in music they thought. "umm..." Mackenzie said unaware how to get out of this. she was not ready to confront Johnny and by the looks of it he was not ready to talk to her either.
Hayden sensed her nervousness, so he had an idea to save them "we were just going to Kenzie's room. yeah, uh, we were" he stood up from the bed and put his shoes on. he glared at Mackenzie that got the hint and stood from the bed, where she previously was. he grabbed her jacket while she put her shoes and as soon as she stood up and grabbed her phone on the way, Hayden said "nice seeing you guys! bye". he opened the door for Mackenzie and left right after.
when they got outside they immediately started walking. "what the fuck! i'm that unlucky" Mackenzie exclaimed. "let's get to your room first" Hayden said waking faster. they were in room 89 when Hayden realized he forgot his phone. "SHIT! wait here. i forgot my phone" he ran back to his room and opened the door finding a very confused group of friends. they immediately stopped talking "forgot my phone" he said while awkwardly chuckling. he grabbed it from his bed and got to the door before hearing a girl's voice say "what the hell was that?" he turned around to see that it was a brunette talking to him. Annie is what he thought her name was "what do you mean?" he asked pretending to not know "don't play dumb. you guys left the second we got here" she said sounding offended.
with this comment Hayden glared at Johnny. as soon as the green eyed boy noticed the stare he looked down "no, we were talking about going to her room before you guys came in. Brynn just got here and we want to talk to her" he said. the girl started to speak "that's bull..." but Hayden never let her finish "gotta go! bye" he said while leaving and closing the door behind him.
"well, that was awkward" Asher said. Johnny was still quiet. he knows he has really messed up, but is he ready to stand up to his friends and the rules? not yet. so he just agreed "yeah it was".
in front of room 89, Mackenzie was left very confused, mad but mostly hurt. there Johnny had and opportunity to talk to her and fix things, but he didn't. he let her go, and didn't even go after her. Hayden got to her after a while and noticed she was sad. he put his arms around her shoulder and started walking again "come on Mack. we can talk in your room" he said.
