narrator's pov

FOR MACKENZIE, THE MONTH HADN'T BEEN THE BEST EITHER. ever since the room incident, as Hayden liked to call it, she was hurt. she has never been close with many people and when she came to this school she met amazing ones.

one of them being Johnny.

when they met that night, she instantly felt connected to him. she thought it was so amazing how he helped her not knowing a thing about her. he did it out of pure kindness. and in their talks that night, she felt close to him, like they knew each other for years.

but that was all thrown away by him. and she couldn't just act like it didn't happen. because it did. she never felt that way about anyone. instantly attracted. and they barely knew each other. it was taking everything in her not to give in and accept being his secret.

Hayden and Brynn worried about her. they constantly had to keep her from going to him. they knew he wasn't a bad guy. but Mackenzie was naive and gullible. he could hurt her in an instant. a look, just an expression and she would be destroyed. so that whole month they watched over her. when she wasn't with Brynn she was with Hayden, sometimes with Sage or Emily. but they tried their best to not leave her alone. in their minds if she was occupied, she wouldn't think about him. they wanted to protect her.

on this particular wednesday, they noticed Johnny staring, per usual. Mackenzie had noticed it too, and it just made everything harder. a lot harder. on this day, she was extremely sensitive. she missed her sister, and she wanted so bad to see her. and when she saw Johnny staring, yet again, she just couldn't handle it. she became sadder. why can't he just forget about this stupid rules? she didn't understand what she was feeling. she had known him for a month, but talked to him for a only a week at most. but she missed him. she didn't want to admit it, but she did. and a lot.

"hey, Mack. do you want to go eat outside?" Hayden asked her in a concerned tone. in the time she was here, they had developed a very strong bond. they knew each other way too well, so he knew how she was feeling right now. "yes please..." she said not looking in his eyes. the curly headed boy nodded before collecting both their stuff and standing up. he was always caring with her. he carried her bags and comforted her when she was sad. she appreciated him too much, he didn't even know.

Mackenzie stood up and looked back at Johnny one more time before leaving. only this time he wasn't staring anymore. he was in a very intense conversation in his table. "let's go" Hayden said putting his hand on her lower back. Emily, Sage and Brynn were in front of the other two, talking it up. Hayden and Mackenzie walked in silence for a while, before Kenzie said "thank you" "for what?" the boy asked confused. "for taking care of me. you don't have too, but you always do. you carry my stuff and look out for me. and i appreciate it" she finally looked up and smiled at him "i love you Hay. friend way tho" she completed. that made Hayden laugh a bit "i love you too silly. friend way" he messed up her hair before side hugging her.

they continued their walk talking, and later joining in with the rest of their group. sure, she missed Johnny. but these people made everything better. they were her second family, her safe zone here. and she loved every single one of them.

she just wished she didn't have to miss Johnny anymore.

mackenzie's pov

IT WAS NOW WEDNESDAY. i had talked to Maddie the previous night and i felt better. a lot better. i still wish i could talk to Johnny tho. but it's okay.

me and Hayden were just leaving dance class to change before lunch. being his pas de deux has been great. we have so much trust and connection that our dances turn out beautiful. it makes me remember why i loved dance so much.

"i'm gonna meet you here in 10. be ready!" he said dropping me off in my room before heading to his. i got in to see Brynn fixing up her make up "hi love" she greeted me. "hey brynny". i headed for my closet and picked some mom jeans and a shirt. i washed my face and applied a bit of make up. while i was applying mascara, Hayden came in "ready?" "i'm ready" Brynn happily said. "just a sec" i said while finishing my make up.

after i did, we headed to the cafeteria. we got our food and sat at our usual table. me, Sage and Emily we're discussing which The Voice juror we would choose. Sage was in the middle of a point "guys, come on. it's obviously Adam. he is a great singer and he is..." but he didn't complete his sentence. he looked wide eyed at something on top of me. seconds later so did Brynn and Emily that we're seated in the same seat as him. "guys?" i asked "what the fuck happened to them?" Hayden who was beside me asked, it looked like he didn't quite get it either.

"hi" a voice said on top of me. i looked up to see the one and only, Johnny Orlando holding his tray. i looked at Hayden who was also in chock before looking back at Johnny "h-hi" i said. "can i seat?" he hopefully asked. i heard Emily gasp in front of me so i kicked her underneath the table "ouch" she exclaimed. "uh sure" i answered getting closer to Hayden so that i would give him space to sit.

that was it. there was the boy i had been wanting to talk to for a whole month, now sitting beside me. in public. well finally.
