As you entered the old, worn down house you couldn't help but smile as you noticed how much you and your mom had gotten done in just two days. After the death of your dad a few months beforehand your family had a hard time getting back on its feet, so when your mom came up with the idea to move back to her childhood home you gladly decided to help out. "Hey mom where do you want me to put this last box", you questioned, taking in her appearance as she turned to face you seemingly having been lost in thought.
"Oh just put it down by the sofa with the other boxes." You placed the box down and turned to face your mom again with a satisfied smile. Making a short walk to her you opened your arms as she did the same giving each other a small victory hug.
"Well we've officially done it", you flung your arm around dramatically indicating the room, "it took us two days but we've officially moved into this old, pretty outdated house. No offense." "Honestly none taken." She sat on the couch with a small oof. "Even when I was younger I thought this house was pretty outdated but it's got its beauty within."
You gave a small laugh and stepped forward only to have the floor board give off a huge groaning sound that honestly worried you a little. " Yep... very, very deep within." You looked around the living room of the Victorian house noticing the cobwebs which decorated the corners of the room along with the ceiling. A layer of dust covered every surface after being untouched for years. We're definitely going to have to do some heavy cleaning. As you stood there you realized that there was an important question you still hadn't asked your mom yet. "Um well anyway where am I going to be staying? I mean this is this first time I've ever been here so I don't exactly have the bearings of the house yet." You shifted the weight on your feet as your mom thought about the question before standing and motioning you to follow her.
"Well considering I'm an adult now I suppose you can take my old room while I take what used to be my parent's room. Your room is just down this hall." As you followed behind your mom you began to remember all the stories she used to tell you about this house. She used to go on and on about how ghosts lived here along with other supernatural things but looking around you didn't see anything that jumped out as grossly horrifying. Except for maybe the decor I mean what were the last owners thinking?
Finally you made it to a open room down the hall. You noticed that you also had a bathroom right across from it which was nice. "Here you are y/n. This used to be mine when I was only in my teens." She sighed in remembrance as she looked around the room. "I used to have red and purple curtains by this window. Oh! And spider web sheets for my bed along with a few horror movie posters on the walls. I also had a circular red carpet with a swirling shape on it." The glee in her voice was evident as she gave every detail of what her room was like when she was little.
Looking at the room you could imagine how your mom had decorated it. She had told you before that she was a very gothic teen and you whole heartedly believed her. Maybe it runs in the family you thought as you looked down at your black and purple outfit. Looking at the room there was only a large bed pushed against the wall and purple paneling on the walls but other than that it was pretty empty.
Your mom turned and made her way out of the room. "I'm going to get you some sheets for the bed so you can rest up after a long day. I'll be right back." She left the room as you sat down on the bed coughing when dust rose from it. This isn't too bad. It'll take some time to adjust sure but it's not bad. You felt a wave of fatigue overcome you as you looked around the room once again. I could live here.
In the following week the house went under massive changes as you and your mom cleaned every bit of it and began to organize your items from the moving boxes. "Y/n don't forget to clean the bathrooms and vacuum your room. I'd help but I still have to sort out our kitchen utensils into these cabinets." With a groan you did as you were told muttering a few curses along the way.
By the end of the week the house actually looked nice enough to live in. After unpacking the last box your mom had gone out and bought some celebratory cupcakes. As you munched on your cupcake you gave yourself a mental pat on the back. Wow not a cobweb in sight, I can see my reflection on the freaking table and this cupcake is fucking delicious. In just a week you'd gotten to know the house pretty well and had been in every room multiple times. Well every room except... "Hey mom what about the attic?" She gave you a surprised but confused look before swallowing the piece of cupcake she had in her mouth."What about it?" "Well we haven't been up there yet since we got here. I don't really know what we're waiting for seeing that we haven't been in that part of the house yet," you said with a slight smile on your lips.
"I already checked it's locked," she answered her stature becoming more tense.
"Well maybe we can find a ke"-but you were interrupted before you could could finish.
"No y/n there isn't one now drop it," she said sharply as your face fell in shock. Her features suddenly softened before she spoke again.
"I-I'm sorry I didn't for that to come out so harsh, it's just dangerous to go up there okay. Plus I doubt you'll find anything interesting there." She relaxed as she placed a hand on yours squeezing it tightly. "By the way I forgot to mention. Your grandparents are coming tomorrow to visit," she said going back to eating her cupcake.
"Wait... what? That's a little soon we've only just finished unpacking," you said surprised by the news.
"I know but they just want to check in to see that everything's alright. I was as surprised as you when they called this morning." She finished off her cupcake before looking at the clock on the wall. "It's nearly 12:00 I'm going to go to bed, you should too. Good night."
She kissed your forehead and made her way to her own room on the opposite side of the house. "Good night mom," you yelled down the hallway before getting up. After a quick shower you lay awake in bed waiting for sleep to take you. Just as you were drifting off you heard noises from the attic upstairs. It sounds like people talking... what am I thinking I'm just tired and superstitious. Good night universe. But as you finally went to sleep doubt and curiosity stayed on the back of your mind.
