"What are you doing here?! With him?!" Kai shouts at me, staring down angrily at Leo. I can practically feel his anger radiating off of him.
A crowd has already started forming around us, even though it's not really even a fight. Not yet, anyway. It takes me a few seconds to register what's going on. Why is Kai here? How did he find me?
Did he follow me?
As soon as Leo stumbles to his feet Kai throws a punch at him, but Leo skillfully dodges it.
"You don't want to fight me, Kai," Leo growls.
"Then tell me why you're with my girlfriend!" Kai shouts, earning a few gasps and whispers from the crowd.
"I just drove her and her friends here, that's all," Leo says calmly, seemingly unphased by Kai's hot temper. "She didn't even know I was coming."
Kai finally turns and looks at me. The anger slowly dissolves from his eyes and his tense muscles start to relax.
Tears well up in my eyes when I think of how this must look to him. I left him the way I did this morning only to come hang out with a guy that he knows has a crush on me.
"Kai..." I choke out through my restricted throat.
He looks down at my hands and furrows his brows. "What happened to you?"
"Some drunk guy plowed her over when we first got here," Leo answers.
"It's fine," I say quickly. "I'm okay."
Kai looks back up at me and even though he doesn't say it, I know I've hurt him. I have to explain what happened today and why I left. I have to be honest if I want us to have a solid relationship.
"Oh...hey, Kai. I didn't know you were coming," Anna says when her and Rue join us. She looks down at my hands and gasps. "Mara! What happened to your hands?!"
"I'll keep an eye on them for the night," Leo says, placing his hand on Anna's shoulder and looking between Kai and me. "Why don't you two get out of here?"
Rue gives me a look that silently asks if I'm okay with that. I nod to her and look up at Kai. "Yeah, let's get out of here."
After I tell my friends goodbye, I follow Kai to his car. We get in and start off in silence, but there's so much that needs to be said. And so many questions that need to be asked.
I turn on my phone and I'm surprised to see dozens of texts from Kai. They start off normal, but quickly get a bit strange.
I'm sorry about this morning.
It's just so hard not to want to spend every minute of every day with you.
Are you mad?
Are you ignoring me?
Where are you?
Mara, please talk to me.
Why are you doing this?
Please, talk to me.
Tell me what I need to do.
I'll do anything.
Where are you?
Tell me where you are!
They go on and on. There's so many that I don't even want to read them all. I put my phone down in my lap and stare straight ahead, too afraid to move or speak.
I can't believe he's being so needy and possessive after only a week together. How did he even find me? He couldn't have followed me if he was asking where I was. Could he? I'm afraid to even ask, but I have to know.
