It was Patrick's 21st birthday. He wanted to throw a big, gay party, but he decided not to do anything.
At this point in life, Alec was his boyfriend, and he suggested that he should do something small but cute at Taylah's house. To Patrick's surprise, all his high school friends were there.
"You know what would be funny?" Tia started as they sat around a circle.
Taylah groaned, "Not another game."
"But what about 44 homes?" she said. They all looked around at each other, and eventually agreed.
They all dubbed Alec to be in. The brunette stood by the base, which was Taylah's couch, and all the others hid in the nearby rooms.
"Let's go downstairs," Miku whispered over to Patrick. The taller boy agreed and they snuck downstairs to hide in the kitchen.
"44 homes!" they could hear Alec's voice echoing down the hallway. It was followed by a number of giggles.
"44 homes!" they hear Taylah yelling, then next by Tia. That must mean they got there.
"We should start going up," Patrick suggested, but Miku held him back.
"No way, Alec's going to run down here so we should wait it out," she suggested. Patrick agreed and they hid back down beneath the kitchen counter tops.
"44 homes!" they hear Vicky yelling upstairs, out of breath and nervous. That meant that they were the last ones in.
"Well we have to go now," Patrick said, looking over to his side. But he realised that Miku wasn't there anymore. Instead, she was sprinting up the staircase, and before he knew it, she was shouting '44 homes' too.
He sighed and got up, hearing his knees crack. He needed to think of a game plan. He was going to sneak up the staircase quietly, and make a run for it when Alec wasn't looking, or he was looking in the other rooms upstairs.
So Patrick lightly trotted up the stairs. He heard Alec's faint footsteps upstairs. Damn. That meant that his plan couldn't work. So instead, he just made a run for it. Patrick dashed like he had never done before. He could feel the sweat running down his collarbones.
But when he got to the top of the stairs, Alec was there, down on one knee, with a ring in his hand.
"Patrick Smith," he said. Patrick stopped in his tracks and gasped. "Will you marry me?"
All his other friends were there, waiting with bouquets of rainbow flowers. Patrick was almost in tears.
"Yes!" he yelped excitedly. Everyone cheered. "A million times yes!"
Alec put the ring onto Patrick's finger and they kissed happily. All his friends clapped.Patrick was so happy. All his friends were there, he was getting married, and he swore he could see Maddy and Alex smiling down at him. He imagined that they would be really happy for him.
And he finally won the game of love.
