It was interesting to see something appear in the air and slowly float down towards the earth. This definitely was a first, since nothing interesting or exciting had ever happened in my 14 years of living. Ever since I was 6, I'd roamed around the bush surrounding the main City. The only times I'd gone into the City was to steal food so I could survive. Of course, I disrupted their eating patterns, since they had specific ways. They give you enough to stay satisfied until the next meal, but it was very healthy and everyone ate the same thing, just in different portions, depending on how much you needed.
I was the black sheep, the outcast, the reject that no one paid attention to. I was a filthy orphan, begging for meals out on the street, and it was clear to everyone that I wasn't worth their time. That's why I left. Only people of importance were worth people's time. I don't remember my parents, but they left me out on the streets alone at the age of three with a letter. The letter was written so neatly, but I couldn't read it. I hung around people a lot, just in the background so I wasn't seen. That was how I learnt to speak. Once I got used to speaking and twisting sounds that came from my mouth into words, I asked someone to read the note to me. It said,
'Somehow, young Elleker, you have learnt to read. Or you've learnt to speak, and gotten someone else to read this to you. Well, Ellek, that means it must be time for you to know. To understand why we left you. We left you on the streets of the City because we were too poor to feed another mouth. Two mouths barely made it, but three? Son, it would never have worked. Good job for being able to read this though. That means you've survived long.'
And that was where it ended. I was holding back tears of anger that had begun to well up in my eyes. Was I really just ANOTHER mouth to feed to them? Did they not love their child enough to look after them? Or was I just a mistake? I have never found out and most likely never will.
But when this being appeared in front of me, I thought it was an angel finally coming down to whisk me away. She was pretty much the opposite, since she looked just as bad as me, but with something that looked like a tattoo in the shape of a flower with the stem curling into a spiral on her ankle. She looked as though she was in her early teens and her eyes told me she didn't know where she was and what was going on.
I silently stepped out of the shadows towards her, and when she looked up she saw me. Her face was filled with terror, and I could see her tense up and get ready to run.
"Who are you?" She asked.
"Elleker. But you can call me Ellek or Ker for short."
And that was where our friendship began.
