"Can I borrow her for a bit?" Wooseok's tone was polite, but his eyes were staring daggers at Kino.
Of course Hyunggu didn't want to risk the other's wrath, so he nodded and went away, presumably to a place far away from Wooseok.
Wooseok caught hold of Mira's forearm and dragged to a corner of the gym where there was barely anyone. Mira looked up at him with wide eyes. This was the first time he had ever been forceful with her.
He heaved a deep sigh, a sigh of regret and disappointment. His eyes glanced up to meet hers.Still not letting go of her arm, Wooseok said, "I'm not gonna lie to you, Mira. You've been playing with my feelings for a while, even if you don't realize it."
He was right. Mira hadn't realized it. His words hit her like a sledgehammer.
Wooseok continued. "If you didn't know, I'm like, majorly crushing on you. And if, somehow, you couldn't tell, Hyunggu is too. So I understand why it's hard for you to make a choice, having to choose between an extremely handsome guy such as myself," Wooseok faintly smiled,"and a charismatic shortie. But, Mira, I don't think I can go on like this."
She blinked a couple times. In that moment, she was certainly not ready for what was about to come next.
"Is it him or me? 'Cause I can't take the pressure anymore."
Mira managed to find her voice again. "Wooseok, I... I'm so sorry. I had no idea."
"I know."
"I'll try my best to make everything right, t-to fix it."
Wooseok grew silent.
Mira blew her hair out of her face. "I'll tell you my decision at the end of the night. I've stalled too much already."
Wooseok was taken aback. "Mira, it's not a f***ing job interview."
"I want to end this as soon as possible." Mira smiled sadly at him.
Two hours isn't enough to decide who you love, Wooseok wanted to scream, but instead, he just pursed his lips.
"I'm going outside to clear my head. Again, I'm sorry." Mira briskly walked away, away from Wooseok, away from everyone, before he had a chance to respond.
Mira plopped down on a red plastic bench. This is why I don't go to dances. Too much drama, she thought sardonically. There she sat for a while, just breathing in the cool night air, listening to the various sounds of all the night critters.
She liked Wooseok. She really did. She had liked from the very first time they met. He was just a sunny presence to be around. Mira couldn't recall a single moment with him that wasn't enjoyable. She knew that he could be very considerate and kind and would do his best to take care of her. He was a great friend.
But were they anything more than that?
Meanwhile, Kino was someone who had totally swept Mira off her feet. Even though they had known each other for a long while, they didn't really talk to each other. Mira was secretly glad for Hyunggu's "scandal" happening. It was the reason they started actually having conversations with each other.
She had never known someone so charismatic, so cool, so...
Words can't describe him, Mira thought. And it was true. Kino was unique in the way he managed to make any girl fall under his spell. Though, she wondered if his kindness was just a facade. Even after getting to know Kino more deeply, doubts lingered in the back of her mind. The rumors surrounding him had to have some truth in them.
Mira didn't want to get her heart broken yet again. And what if she did choose Hyunggu? The whole school would obviously find out, and Mira would have to prepare for all the terrible names and mean gossip that would follow. Being called a bitch would be the least of her problems.
So. Those were her two choices.
A passionate and intimate romance, but with a lot of problems, like some greasy paperback in a used book store, or a relationship that would be almost exactly like a friendship, but with the added benefit of skinship.
The dangerous pick or the safe pick.
Mira let out a deep exhale. Whichever path she went down, someone would be hurt. Mira was always the one to play it safe, to think logically, to sacrifice one for the majority, but tonight, her vision felt clouded.
She knew Wooseok would be the one with the least collateral (she hated that she was thinking of love like real estate), but her innermost feelings drew her to Hyunggu.
Mira pinched the bridge of her nose. The best decision was probably to pick no one at all. It would save her the headache.
Immediately after that, she chided herself for being stupid. If she was going to be honest with herself, there was one pick that would be the least likely to get anyone hurt.Wooseok.
Trying to erase any last minute indecisions from her head, Mira headed back inside before she could change her mind.
She saw Kino in the corner of her eye, slow dancing with some girl. And then she saw Wooseok, standing tall, smiling a bit wistfully at her by the water fountain.
"Hey," he said in a way that sent goosebumps up her spine.
"Hey," Mira replied, holding her right arm with her left hand in a semi-awkward gesture. "So... I think I made my decision."
Wooseok looked at her expectantly, internally bracing himself for rejection.
Mira stepped a foot closer, until the tips of their shoes were touching. "It's you," she murmured.
Wooseok gleefully picked Mira up and pressed his lips to hers quickly. And for that moment, Mira forgot all the worries that plagued her.
