Janelle’s POV

When I got home that night, I didn’t want to wake up my parents, so I closed the door quietly behind me and began to take off my shoes in the foyer. But when I heard a noise in the living room, I stopped.

There were sniffles. “Why Michael? Why is it that you treat us like this? What do you have against us?” A female voice cried. There was silence. “Are you going to answer me?”

“What do you want me to say, Jaydi? I mean, I never told you I had anything against you or Janelle. Why do you always have to assume things?” That was my father’s voice. I stayed still as a stone. I didn’t want them to know I was here.

“I’m not assuming anything! All of a sudden this Bianca child sleeps over here and she has a mother that she can go to! Why is she here? Can’t you see that you’re making Janelle feel like an outsider in this family? What you’re doing is wrong, Michael.” My mother replied, still crying.

“She can’t go to her mother, Jaydi. Chyna is busy, she has to work. She depends on me to take care of Bianca. Bianca is my child, she’s my responsibility.” Daddy said.

“Janelle is your child too! She’s your responsibility also! Sometimes I think the only reason you pay any attention to Junior is because Bianca likes him.” Mama said. “You got me pregnant when I was seventeen, remember that? I threw my whole life away for you! And today you just treat me like I’m some kind of garbage?”

“I don’t treat you like garbage, Jaydi. I love you.” Daddy replied.

“You don’t act like you love Janelle, though. Baby, all I’m asking you to do is warm up to her a little. Show her some love. Make her feel like you two are close again.” Mama pleaded. Daddy sighed.

“Janelle isn’t cooperating with me. She’s being rude to Bianca and I want the two of them to be close.”

“Forget about Bianca. Just focus on Janelle and Junior.” Mama said. Then there was silence, implying that they were either hugging or kissing. After a few seconds, I heard Mama’s soft, draggy footsteps walking away from the living room, so I hid behind the umbrella holder until she was up the stairs.

I opened the door and closed it again, pretending I had just walked in.

“Janelle, is that you?” Daddy called to me.

“Yeah, it’s me.” I said, walking out of the foyer and into the living room. The lights in the living room were off besides a dull lamp in the corner, and a little light was coming in from the hallway. I walked slowly to where Daddy was sitting on the couch.

He motioned for me to sit next to him, so I did. Then there was silence.

“How was the date?” He asked. I felt my cheeks flush when he used the word ‘date’.

“It wasn’t a date.” I said.

“Janelle, you went out with a boy, didn’t tell me where you were going, and came back two hours after you left. I’m not too stupid to know what a date is.”

I bit my lip. If Daddy only knew what had happened tonight. I didn’t even have time to think about it yet. I didn’t reply to him.

“Did y’all work on the song?” He asked. I shook my head no. “Janelle, I love you.” He said after a while. I looked up at him. I don’t remember the last time he said that to me. I mean, he might’ve said it recently, but I don’t remember the last time he said it and meant it.

“I love you too.” I replied. Then he hugged me and kissed my forehead, and I fell asleep on my father’s chest on that couch.

It was starting to feel like I was getting my family back. And hopefully, it would stay that way.

                                                                      * * *

The next day, Mama went to work in the morning, Junior was nowhere to be found, and Daddy was taking Bianca and me to the studio to meet the boys.

I was SO UPSET. There me and Daddy were last night, having one of those sweet daughter-father moments, and then now this morning he’s still trying to make me get close to his ‘other child’?

“I know y’all haven’t been spending that much time together, but this is your chance. So stay right here and talk while I go back inside to get something.” He said to us. He went back inside, leaving Bianca and I standing in the driveway behind my house.

I didn’t talk to her. I just averted my mind from my messed up family and thought about Roc, and how he kissed me last night…

“HELLO? Are you deaf or something?” Bianca yelled at me, snapping me out of my beautiful memory.

“What do you want?” I asked, making it obvious that I was annoyed.

“I said, what was up with you and Roc last night? Did Princeton turn you down, so you had to resort to another member of MB?” She asked, laughing. I rolled my eyes.

“I only tried to make Princeton like me that day because I wanted to compete with you—which was stupid. I don’t even like him. It’s Roc that I want, and Roc wants me. So just mind your business and leave me alone please.” I said.

Just when Daddy was approaching us, she said: “We’ll see who wants who when we get to the studio.”

Then we got into the car and drove to the studio.

When we got there, Daddy had to leave. He and his friend were going to look for Junior. Meanwhile, all the members of Mindless Behavior, Bianca, and I were sitting in the studio, going over the hook for our song and talking.

I sat next to Roc.

“My dad asked me how the date was last night.” I told him. Our chairs were close to each other, and we would’ve sat in the same chair if there was no one around.

“What did you tell him?” He asked, playing with a loose thread on the arm of my sweater.

“I said it wasn’t a date.” I replied. Roc looked at me, and I laughed. “What was I supposed to say?” I said.

“You should’ve told him that you had the best night of your life. That’s what I would’ve said.” He whispered to me.

“I did have the best night of my life, but only because I was with you.” I said, resting my head on his shoulder.

“Alright guys, let’s go a few doors down. We’ll get things together in there.” Ricky, the manager said. Prodigy, Princeton, and Ray-Ray walked out. Bianca walked over to Roc.

“Ricky says to come with me, he wants you to help me with vocals or something like that.” She said to him, not looking at me. Roc followed her out the door.

I wasn’t going to let her seduce Roc. I had to monitor them. I began to get up from the chair, when Princeton came back in.

“Hey.” He said. I smiled at him, and began walking toward the door.

“Um, they said they don’t need us in there right now.” He said.

“How come?” I asked, confused. How could they say they didn’t need me in the studio when it was my song?

“I don’t know. But they’ll let us back in there in a little while.” Prince said, sitting in Roc’s chair. I sat down in the chair next to it. God, I didn’t want to be here right now.

“So um, Janelle’s your name right?” He asked. I nodded. “Wow. That name fits you.”

“What do you mean?” I asked him.

“Well, it’s a pretty name for a pretty girl.” Prince said. I didn’t want to blush, but I did.

“Thanks.” I said.

“I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m shy around you. It’s because, you know…Don’t tell Roc, but I like you.”

I didn’t know what was happening when he grabbed my hand, rubbed it with his thumb, and then brought it up to his mouth to kiss it. And then he asked me for a hug, and I gave it to him, and it lasted too long. And his hands slid down...

I ran out the room.
