During the lunch break the next day, it was pouring rain. Sherly and I stood near the door for a few seconds before letting out a heavy sigh. "Great... Where are we going to eat now? " She asked to no one in particular. I shrugged and leaned my back against the door, sliding down on it and sitting on the floor. Sherly watched me pull out a sandwich and start eating it.
"So you're not even gonna bother and eat right here, huh?"She said, mimicking me right after I took my first bites. " Why should I? It's quiet here." I mumbled out, lifting the hood to my hoodie over my head to get cozy. " And no teachers to tell you to pull your hood down." She said with a small giggle, poking it lightly.
I shook my head lightly, rolling my eyes to her comment. I kept eating my lunch as she started to talk about what her big brother, Jonathan, made for dinner last night. From what I understand, it was a Korean dish that needed salted cabbage and other ingredients I forgot. Kimchi I believe, if I understood her properly the first time.
I heard footsteps come our way, I didn't bother to check who it was. I pulled down my hood, looking down to my phone as Sherly kept talking, hoping that if it's a teacher, he or she would leave soon. Sherly stopped talking and shifted beside me, seeming to turn towards our new 'guest'. "Oh, hello Jackson." She said in a happy tone.
My whole body froze at the name. What does he want? I bit my tongue, keeping my gaze on my phone, making it look a lot more interesting than the handsome male. I heard him clear his throat, stopping in front of us both. "Hello, my dear ladies." He said in a sweet tone. It was almost sickening to hear him talk in such tone after last night.
"May I talk to Paige one on one, my dear Sherly?" The words were enough to make her blush, I could see it from the corner of my eye. I wanted to say no, tell her not to leave me alone with him, but my mouth refused to move and form the words, it just stayed in a straight, thin line. " Oh, um, sure! I'll just go to the ladies room to let you both chat!" She said, almost too excited. She sprung up and walked off on a quick pace, small giggles could be heard from where I sat.
Once Jackson seemed satisfied with how far Sherly was from us, he let out a small sigh and took a few steps closer. I kept my gaze focused on the phone between my now trembling hands, my heart beating at a crazy speed as I could feel my head spin a bit. What would he do now? We are in a hidden part of the school, no teachers go by here and barely any students hang around here. Any hope of running away is crossed to zero as he is quite the athlete while I, on the other hand, am normal.
He kneeled in front of me, his hand quickly darting to my phone, taking it out of my grasp before I could even blink an eye. " I need you to listen and hear me out, without any distraction." He said, pinching the corner of the screen between his thumb and pointer finger. His other hand found it's way under my chin, lifting it to force me to look up at him.
" What happened last night stay between us two. No telling anyone." He said in a cold tone, similar to the one he used last night, but not as bad as last night. "Why would I have to take your orders?" I asked him, trying to give him my best glare to show how much I dislike him and want him to go away.
My attempt had a contrast effect he laughed at me. "You know, that look was cute but it doesn't suit you." He said, his lips curving to a small smirk. To say the least, I wasn't expecting him to laugh and compliment me. Wait, can that be considered a compliment?
"And to answer your question, it's for your safety. " He said, every hint of playfulness gone. He was back to his cold, serious tone. " Look, I know you won't like it, but you got to trust me on this. Don't tell anyone what I did or where I go after school. " He said, looking me right in the eyes. " You make it sound like you are up to something fishy." I dared to say.
