I yawn slightly as I continued to look down the scope of the AS-50 sniper rifle. I watched the party flow in the building opposite. The rich celebrating after they sent three men to their death.
'And I thought I was the monster' I shook my head to rid myself of the thought and continue to search for my target. My long wavy black hair fluttered softly in the summer night air. My black one piece and thin black with red lining leather jacket were enough to keep me warm but if it was winter I would be a different situation. The small earpiece in my left ear buzzed quietly as the transmission from Eric came through.
"You found him yet? I'm looking at the security camera and I can't spot him." I conduct a once over at the room. Employees from the Ford-Corporation filled the room as they chatted about their next date to meet up, sharing drinks and talking about life. Yet their host is nowhere to be seen. You'd think it would be easy to spot a silvered hair man who wears nothing but sports bottoms and long-sleeved jumper among the richly dressed.
"Haven't seen him, having the same problem. Maybe he didn't show up? Does seem like the type of guy to skip these types of meetings." A small chuckle came from the other end. I could imagine him, at home eating his Chinese takeaway with chopsticks just enjoying the view. Eric King is an old friend and my technician man when it comes to my job. His striking dirty blonde hair and his blue eyes could make any woman swoon over him. Too bad for them he doesn't swing that way.
"No way he isn't going to show up today. He called for this meeting himself, not being he- Wait I see him." My body readied up,
"Where is he?"
"He's in the lift should be in your view... now." And like he said the doors of the elevators opened and out stepped the man of the hour. He wore baggy blue sports trousers with a black overhanging jumper. His hands shoved into his pockets and his head hung low. His long shaggy silver hair hung in front of his face, hiding his expression. His sneakers padded on the ground, as I could tell the atmosphere in the room is silent by the constant eyes on his composed figure. His slouched figure calmly walked towards the small stage and stood to face the wide window that I happened to look through.
"Patch me into the coms now Eric." Without a second moment, I could hear everything within the wide room. The quiet murmurs within the crowd died down as he flipped his hair out of his face to reveal his pale white skin and dark bags under amber red eyes.
"Hey everyone, glad you could make it." He spoke with a casual and boring tone. This was definitely the last place he wanted to be at this moment.
"I'm here to congratulate you on another year of great progress but we have a lot of ground to cover still. We still have a few bugs that need taking care of." When saying that he looked directly down my scope at me and flashed a small smirk before returning to his usual dead-panned face.
"Eric... He knows."
"How does he? I covered every path and you're in the most secure spot."
"Well, he knows." I continued to listen to his speech.
"Enjoy the night because from here on out, it'll only get better or worse for those who can't handle the pressure." A few worried faces dusted the crowd as they looked at him suspiciously.
"Those who have concerns or who believe they shouldn't be here. I invite you to my room. Floor 48 room 69, I'll speak to you soon." With that, he took one hand out of his pockets to give a gracious bow before returning it to its home and walking slowly to the elevator. The room parted to give way to him. Before he entered he looked in my direction again giving me yet another small smirk, showing a sharp-fanged tooth before recovering his mask. He disappeared into the elevator alone and the party continued as normal everyone enjoying the night. I let the tension settle before letting out a low sigh. I stood from my prone position and rolled my shoulders backward earning a satisfying crack. I began packing my rifle away but detached the small smg that previously acted as the rifle's pistol grip.
"What do you think you're doing, you don't think meeting him is the best idea right now?" I rolled my eyes, easy for him to say. The worst thing that will happen is that he gets his computer hacked, while I'll get a bullet in my head. That's if he gets lucky.
"I'll be careful, it's not like I wasn't invited. He literally told me to see him. If he wanted to harm he would have shot me. If I don't like the situation I'll pull myself out."
"What if you can't? You've seen the reports and what he's caused. He isn't afraid to do anything. He isn't like the others, Kris, he lives in a world where morals and rules don't apply." Yes, I've seen the reports. The torture he has endured to his victims and those they loved. It would make anyone turn white and book themselves into a mental asylum. Thankfully the only two people he can use against me are on the other end of this wire and in another country under strict protection. He's also forgetting one more fact. I'm not from this world either.
"If it comes the that you know the fail-safe, phoenix." I packed the bag and hid it in the vent to retrieve in the morning hopefully but checked my boots for the hidden knives and my collar for the other blades. I checked the mag of bullets as I listened for Eric's response.
"You sure about this, you understand what this means, phoenix?" Shoving the mag back in I cocked the handle and made my way down the stairwell of the building to the hotel across the road.
"Yes, I'm checking with you to make sure you know what you're doing if I call it. I'm sure he has an ace up his sleeve and I have a sense that today is the day. You better crack open and other monster drink." I heard the distant fizz of the can opening and the gulping of the liquid as Eric downed another one of his addicting drinks.
"Already ahead of you Kris. Promise me you won't get yourself killed."
"No promises there Eric. Let's see what Lucio has in store for us." The elevator door closed as I hit the floor number 48 like instructed and looked in the corner of the elevator at the camera that I knew Eric is staring through.
"I have your back, Kris. I'm not leaving you."
