I open the door to my penthouse apartment. Mum bought me it because she thought it would make moving easier. I walk inside, and glance around. It's humungous, filled with glossy countertops, marble finish's, leather couches, and floor to ceiling windows. Literally any other girl my age would kill for an apartment like this, but money doesn't make me happy. It used to. When dad died, he left us with millions, which helped the pain at first but then just made it worse. I feel my phone vibrate, so I pull it out of the pocket of my designer jeans and see it's my mum.
"Hi mum," I say.
"Hey sweetie! How's Sydney? Met any cute guys yet?" My mum acts like she's still a teenager. She had me when she was sixteen.
"Sydney's Sydney," I say, ignoring her other question.
"Do you like the apartment?" She asks, and I can hear the anxious tone in her voice. She is the type of person who always tries her hardest to make everyone happy. That's my favourite thing about her.
"Yes," I say, because I want her to be happy. The truth is I couldn't care less about where I lived.
"Oh thank god! I was afraid it wasn't big enough." I almost snort. I'm sure mum bought me the biggest one she could find.
"How's Naomi?" I ask. Naomi is my little sister, but she's more like a best friend to me.
"She's good, just on a date with Zac right now," Mum tells me.
"Zac?" I haven't heard of him, it feels like every week Naomi's dating a new guy, it's hard to keep up. Naomi's the prettiest, most popular girl in her year, just like I was. Before Carson...
"Yeah, he seems nice enough. So what are your plans for tonight darling?" Mum says.
"Probably going to order pizza and watch a movie or something," I reply. I'm not really the partying type at all.
"Oh, well Carly told me that- oh my gosh! I totally forgot! I booked you a ticket to a Ruel concert. Naomi said he was great when she went to his concert in Melbourne! Please will you go? You never know who you might meet!" Mum squeals. Carly is her best friend, who also acts like she's seventeen.
"Oh mum..." I say, thinking. I honestly don't want to go out at all. But mum has been so thoughtful and I would feel bad if she went to all that effort and I just said no... "Sure I'll go." The words slip out of my mouth.
"Great!" My mum sounds so happy. "Now Carly is texting me, apparently she has some gossip about that David guy from down the street. Call me after the concert, okay?"
"Sure mum, love you," I reply.
"Love you too sweetie! Bye!"
I hang up. Then sigh. Oh great, now I've agreed to go to a stupid concert. Maybe I can just say I was not feeling great... But then mum would be so disappointed. I decide I'll just go. I walk into my huge modern bedroom, open up my suitcase and let my clothes spill onto the plush charcoal carpet. I grab a cute white skirt and an orange tank top. Next I grab my phone and check my emails. I see that mum has forwarded me the ticket. The concert starts at 8pm, and it's only 5, so I get out my laptop so I can watch some Netflix or whatever.
