The door quietly opened as a female maid came through the door. She walked over to a bed covered in silk blankets and pulled the blankets off of a young girl, about seven or eight years old. The girl had short brown hair, styled in a pixie cut, but her just waking up looked more like she had gone through a wind storm. She was wearing a pink nightgown, that draped over her slender body. The girl closed her eyes tightly and tried to pull the blanket back over her.
But the maid quickly pulled it out of her reach."It's time to get up, your lessons are soon." The maid said while tugging on the girl's sleeve. The girl just mumbled something about hating her lessons.
"Young Lady Emmilia, your Aunt says it is time for your lessons. You don't want to make her mad do you." The maid warned.
"No, I don't," Emmilia answered, as she sat upright. She rubbed her eyes, and messed with her hair a bit, before standing up. She stood there waiting for the maid to dress her. The maid walked over to a large wardrobe, she opened it up, and hanging up were twenty or so beautiful gowns. Most of which were either gold or purple in color.
"Which one?" The maid asked.
"The plain one with the purple stitches," Emmilia answered. The maid pulled out a white gown that had purple swoops in it, it also had a purple tie that wrapped around the waist. The maid set the gown on the bed and pulled the nightgown off of Emmilia. Then she slid the gown over Emmilia's head, pulled her arms through the sleeves. She turned Emmilia around and tied the tie around Emmilia's small waist. She tied it into a beautiful bow. Emmilia sat down on the edge of the bed. The maid slid a black pair of shoes and tied the laces.
Emmilia stood up from the side of the bed and heading to the back of the room where a large, white vanity sat. It was covered in more jewelry than one reasonable person should have.
The Maid pulled out a large, white chair from the vanity making a loud cluuuunk sound across the wooden floor. Emmilia sat down in the large chair, well it was large compared to Emmilia's tiny body. The maid grabbed a blue-green brush sitting next to Emmilia.
The maid brushed through Emmilia's hair, untangling it and making it presentable for a Lady. Emmilia just sat there staring into the vanity, her eyes glazed over thinking about ways to get out of her lessons.
"All done," Said that maid as she set the brush back down on the vanity.
"Thank you, Olivia," Emmilia said while standing up and walking out of the bedroom door.
She walked into a spacious, well-lit hallway. She walked by empty suits of armor, fancy oil painting, and large spacious doors. She neared a beautiful spiraling staircase and quickly walked down holding the sides of her dress.
"Emmilia, you better get down here now!" A woman yelled from downstairs.
"I'm coming Lady Nefare," Emmilia shouted back. She started to run down the stairs, pulling her dress higher up revealing her upper shins. Once she neared the bottom of the staircase, she stopped letting her dress fall to cover herself. She stood up straight and very slowly walked down the rest of the stairs. On the base of the stairs, a middle-aged woman with bobbed white hair, and a long black evening gown was standing straight her hands folded together.
"Hello, Lady Nefare," Emmilia said while curtsying.
"Young Lady Emmilia," Lady Nefare said in response to Emmilia, she curtsied. She then returned to her original pose. "Let's get to your lessons," They both walked, backs straight, eyes forward, their heads faced up. They didn't look real how elegantly and smoothly they walked down the hallway toward a large archway. As they entered the archway, a single desk sat by a 5' by 6' chalkboard. Around the gigantic room were hundreds, thousands of books, charts, diagrams. They were some books that there were five of them, but they were all in different languages.
"Why do I have to do lessons today? I did all my work yesterday. I also was studying after our lessons for four hours. I don't want to do lessons today." Emmilia whined.
"Because you will be the next ruler of Humlik, soon." Lady Nefare answered.
"I am not the ruler, though, my mother is still the ruler. She's just sick is all." Emmilia corrected.
"She is too sick to continue ruling. She told me not to tell you, but she is going to step down from being Empress. She is giving it to you, but because you are not yet old enough to rule, I am going to become your regent*." Lady Nefare exclaims.
"No, my mother can still rule. She is going to get better," Emmilia's voice cracked for a moment as tears built up in her eyes, but she blinked them away. "My mother is going to get better and you will not be my regnant or rejent or whatever."
"Don't take that tone with me, you're only eight. You will not be ready to be a ruler until you are twenty. I am going to step in and rule for you. Your mother is dying and you are too young." Lady Nefare shouted back a scowl on her face. "Now, let's get to your lessons." Her face went back to a doll-like state.
"Fine," Emmilia mumbled.
