Leah bursts into the room and sets her handbag on a small stool before kicking off her heels and collapsing on a couch. She has this look on her face. I can't tell what it is. She leans forward in her chair and raises an eyebrow while pouting. "So, the URGENT issue is for me to sit and watch you tidy your living room?" Percy runs towards Leah from her hiding spot and tackles her with licks. Leah laughs. "Oh, PERCY! I really just want to take you home. You're SO CUTE!"
I roll my eyes. Leah has this habit of stressing her words, making things sound way bigger than they are. I set down my spraying things and remove my mittens. I pick up the note at the centre table and hand it to her. I sit beside her and Percy walks over to me while Leah reads the note. When she's done, she tosses it.
"So what?"
"It could be something important. I'm not an ordinary person. I have to be careful."
She sighs, "What do you think?"
I tell her my fears. She has this really perplexed look on and I can tell she's just as confused as I am. I stand up.
"Do you want some food?" She's beaming. She stands up to follow me to the kitchen.
"What you got?" I shake my head. She's just coming from a party and the first thing on her mind is food.
"Only fruits for you. Something else for me."
"And what do you call it?"
I look back at her over my shoulder. "Oh, you know, something I cooked up. Doesn't exist, yet."
"You know, you should start a cooking show."
Leah throws Percy a few strawberries. Finally, after finishing off her fruits, she sets the plate in front of the cat. "Leah," I say, "You don't have to act all nice about hating the strawberries."
She hits me playfully in the stomach. "WHY don't you go as the both?"
"Huh?" I turn to rest against the sink and face Leah. She replies. "I'm just saying, go to the bus stop, spy on them - you ARE a spy, after all - see what side of you they want to meet and just YOU KNOW, go with the flow."
I hate how Leah says ' what side of me'. But I must admit it. This is the smartest thing I've heard from her since I knew her.
"That is a brilliant idea. How did I not think of that?"
She flips her hair in my face.
"It's probably because you are NOT as smart as me." That makes me roll my eyes. She quickly rushes to the living room and picks up her bag.
"Going already?"
She looks at me and places her hand on my shoulder like she's my mom or something. I slap her hand off.
"Oh, HON. You'll be FINE! I gotta return now." She adopts an annoying Australian accent. Then, whispers, "I gotta clean up that party before the peeps get home, ah?"
She winks and bends down to pat Percy. "Bye, sweetie"
She blows me a kiss and goes out.
When she's gone, I kneel on one knee and rub Percy's fur while the cat purrs. "Let's hope this goes well."
