Right Decision

You're at home...

"I don't think you know what you're doing," she says, concern evident on her face.

"You don't know what I know," you respond.

"I think you're making a big mistake," she says, reaching for you. You pull your hand away, making her expression momentarily grow pained. It snaps back immediately as she puts her walls up again.

"I think I have a right to make mistakes if I want to," you reply, studying her face. She always does this. She pushes her emotions down whenever you're making a decision she figures you shouldn't be making. She seems to think it'll make you less emotional. It does the absolute opposite because it annoys the shit out of you.

"But this mistake affects us both," she tells you, using that voice she always does. It's monotone; it sounds like she's talking to a child.

You hate it.

"Mom, you're going to have to understand that at some point, my life is mine, and your life is yours."

"But you're not talking about moving a city away. You're talking about leaving the country."

"And? Do you think I can't do it?" you reply. She looks at you, and you can see those walls coming down.

"I can't stop you, can I?"

"Considering I've already bought the plane ticket, no."

"Where will you live?"

What she doesn't know is that you know exactly where you're going to live. You've kept this secret from her for several years, and you don't have any intention of telling her now.
"I'll find something. I have friends there," you reply. You can see that "friend" in your mind right now. You suppress a smile. You miss her a lot.

She looks at you; you can't read her expression. Is she going to finally give in? You look at each other for what feels like forever. And then, she shakes her head before turning around and leaving. You watch as she walks out, not even looking back.

You knew she would object, but you had to tell her. You couldn't just leave without a trace; you do love her. But now, you're wondering if you should have just left and let her find out on her own when she came to visit your apartment.

You look down at your half-packed suitcase and sigh. You knew this was the right decision in the end, but you don't know why every decision felt wrong.

"I missed you so much," she says the moment she sees you, throwing her arms around you. You let your luggage fall to the side as you wrap your arms around her and pull her closer. She smells sweet like she always does. Her short hair tickles your cheek as you bury your face in her neck.

"I missed you too, Demi," you reply, closing your eyes and melting into her touch. You feel like everything in your life has been leading up to this moment. All those decisions that felt like the wrong one are blown away. This was the right decision. This is where you're supposed to be. This is where you belong.

"I love you a lot," she mumbles by your ear.

"I love you, too."

You pull apart and look at one another. Her brown eyes stare into yours, and you feel yourself on the brink of tears. You've finally made it. After so much, you've finally made it.

"You okay?" she asks softly.

You smile slightly. "Yeah. I am."

Working long hours, being away from her, keeping it all a secret—it was all worth it in the end. You were apart for two years while you finished university and saved up. You never thought your lives would become this intertwined when you met her three years ago. She was the study abroad student who just so happened to be in your class and just so happened to sit next to you. Neither of you expected this. But here you are, far from your home country and now in hers.

Was it worth it? Yes. It really was.

Hello

yes

I'm aware that I was gone for months

I was like...dealing with stuff but I'm trying to get back to writing because ultimately, I'm too fucking stubborn to change gears now and say I'm going to have a future without some form of writing as a part of it
