Normalcy

A/N I think this is a new experience for most, whether it be in work or school, so I thought I'd play with the idea a bit.

You're in a Zoom meeting with your boss and colleagues...

"Does that sound alright?" she asks, and you all nod, a few people doing a thumbs up. You've gotten used to non-verbal responses. Otherwise, you wind up talking over everyone else, and that's definitely not what you want in a meeting with so many people. "Okay, then let's meet up again at the same time next week. Contact me if there are any questions or troubles. I'll be available during the work day as I was before." She smiles slightly and brushes her long brown hair aside. It's curled beautifully today. "Please stay safe and take care," she says, smiling. Her red lipstick is bright, accentuating the brown of her eyes.

People wave as they start to leave, and a few people say a short "thank you". You usually wait for her to end the meeting, but this time, she doesn't. Before you know it, you're the only two left in the meeting room.

She seems to notice and smiles slightly. You can distinctly see her blushing, and you feel your own cheeks flush.

"Thank you," you blurt out before leaving. Your heart is beating rapidly as you stare at your computer screen. You don't really know what just happened. Why did she make that face? Why was she blushing? She looked so beautiful, though.

You let out a breath. She's your boss. You can't do this.

You lean back on your chair while you think and nearly fall off. Now your heart is racing for a different reason. But that aside, you don't know what to make of her expression at the end of the meeting.

You didn't plan to run into an issue with your project. It just happened. You email Demi to ask for a meeting, and she replies immediately saying she can talk in an hour. So you wait.

"Hey!" she says when you connect.

"Hi," you reply. "Thank you for meeting with me."

"Of course," she responds. She's smiling, her brown eyes shining in the sunlight.

"How are you?" you ask.

She lets out a soft sigh. "I'm alright. How are you?" she asks.

"I'm good," you respond, wondering what the sigh was for.

"So, what's the problem with your project?" she questions, leaning on her hand as she looks toward you.

Your heart beats faster. "I seem to be missing some elements," you say before going on to explain the whole problem. She listens to you intently, occasionally taking notes.

"I think we can probably figure out what to do within an hour," she says, and you nod. "Do you have the time right now?"

"Of course."

She smiles slightly, as if she expected you to say that you didn't have the time. You work together for a while, figuring out the issues and working through them together. Eventually, you reach a point where there's nothing more to do other than polishing it up.

"Thank you so much for your help," you say, and she nods.

"Of course. I'm glad I could help." She flashes a smile, making your heart beat faster. She brushes her hair behind her ear. "What are you up to later?" she asks, and you pause, unsure if you heard her correctly.

"Nothing much," you reply.

"Would you like to have a drink with me? Virtually, I mean," she laughs.

You feel confused. Is she asking you out?

"I would love to," you say, but she can hear the tentativeness in your voice.

"I don't want you to feel weird about all this," she says quickly. "I know I'm your boss, but can't we just meet as two people?"

You let out a breath and nod. "Yeah. I'd like that," you reply with a smile.

That night, you spend some time chatting with her over video call. She's wearing causal clothing, seeming to reinforce the "two people meeting" idea. It's nice. It's a bit of normalcy in the completely abnormal world.

And you're grateful for it.
