It's been six months...
You slowly fell out of touch with Demi. The whole thing about the fake wedding has died down, and your mother has given up. You won't listen to her, and you both know it. You don't want to just shut Demi out of your life completely, but she hurt you so much. You know she didn't mean to, and that somehow makes it even worse. You feel guilty for being unable to forgive her. Half of you feels like maybe now, you could. But you don't know.
You lie on your bed, looking up at the ceiling. You remember all the good times you had together. You fell in love like falling sleep. Slowly, all at once, then jerking back in a panic.
You let out a breath and roll over onto your side. You've avoided social media for months. Maybe it's time to take a look.
You take your phone and go to your twitter account. You have a lot of notifications, but you ignore them all, instead going to Demi's account.
She has recent tweets.
I can't sleep
I'm so bored I might start playing fortnite
I love you
I still love you
You blink when you see her words. You don't know if she's talking about you, but you have a feeling.
You look through her tweets. There's nothing especially interesting. You see nothing with Lance. You see nothing anywhere.
You still have her number. You're tempted to call, but you put your phone down.
You feel ready. But is she?
———
The following day, you call her. It rings and rings and rings. Just when you're about to give up, she answers.
"Hello."
You almost burst into tears.
"Demi," you say, letting out a ragged breath.
"It's you," she whispers. "I thought I'd never hear your voice again."
"I'm sorry."
"No, stop. I'm sorry. It's all my fault. How are you? Are you okay?" she asks, and you nod before remember it's a phone call and she can't see you.
"Yes. I'm okay. I'm good. I just...I missed you," you say truthfully.
"I missed you, too," she whispers. "These months without you have been hell. I can't even imagine how much worse it must have been for you."
"It's okay. It's my fault, too."
"No, it's not. You had a right to feel the way you did," she says, letting out a breath.
"Thanks," you reply, unsure of how else to respond.
"Do you want to meet? Maybe talk?"
"I'd love that."
———
So you meet her. She looks even more beautiful than you'd remembered.
"Hi," you say, your heart beating faster.
"Hi," she says.
You know in your heart that you've forgiven her. She made mistakes; everyone makes them.
"I forgive you. Do you forgive me?" you ask softly.
She smiles before opening her arms. "Nothing to be forgiven."
You throw your arms around her and breathe in her familiar scent.
You love her.
You still do.
So that's why you tell her, "I love you so much."
"I love you," she whispers back. She pulls away enough to look into your eyes.
"Marry me. For real. No more secrets," you say, and she nods.
"Yes. I promise."
And so you get married. For real. And for once, the happily ever after was not solely reserved for fairytales.
