Second period passed with much more gossip, talks of hot guys and Valerie's ex, who was trash.
"Car!"
I turned around, searching for where Ember came from before making my way to her.
She started bouncing up and down as we walked. "Did you hear about the news yet?" she asked, excitedly.
I frowned. "What news?"
"They're coming back!" she cheered, breaking into a mini dance.
Squinting at her, eyebrows furrowed, I tried to figure out what she was talking about.
Then it hit me. Is it—?
I gasped. "No."
She nodded, eyes gleaming.
"You're kidding."
She shook her head.
"You're serious?"
"Yes!"
Our eyes locked together and we both broke out into smiles that grew bigger and bigger.
"What the fuck are you two doing in the middle of the hallway?" Corey greeted, swooping in out of nowhere.
I opened my mouth, only to close it when Ember said: "We'll explain when we get to class. The bell's about to ring."
The three of us hurried into class together and took our seats that were conveniently placed close to each other, forming a mini circle so we could talk.
"So?" Corey gestured wildly.
"They're coming back!" Ember wiggled her hands in a fit of excitement.
Corey immediately caught on and wasn't impressed. "For fucks sake, they couldn't stay away longer?"
I scowled. "They've been gone forever. Me and Ember have been the only ones to get in trouble for the past two months."
Corey rolled his eyes. "I'm pretty sure you've been getting in less trouble since they've been gone." He turned to me. "You know those three aren't going to be happy about it."
I laughed. "Like I gave a fuck. Too bad my life's not about them; it's about me. The Three Musketeers can kiss my black ass."
The bell rung then and my teacher called the class's attention.
The people Ember and I were so excited about were our best friends, Calix and Milo. We'd all been friends since middle school and as we grew in other places, we'd formed a best-friend's-who-sometimes-sleep-together relationship. Nothing was weird between us and everything was perfect; until plot twist, Calix and Milo joined an exchange program with students in New York about two months ago.
They're coming back, I thought, smiling.
"Have you heard when?" I whispered to the back of Ember's neck.
She scribbled something down on a paper and threw it over her shoulder.
Idk when, I just heard that it was today, it read.
I sighed. I wanted to see them now. Waiting was not my forte.
After putting up a remarkable and admirable effort to make it through half a worksheet, I'd decided I had done enough and put my head down, promptly falling asleep.
Waking up, what felt like seconds later, Ember was shaking my shoulder and the bell was ringing. "Come on. It's lunchtime."
"Where's Corey?" I asked groggily.
