"I can't fucking believe you," I muttered to Michael, who shrugged.
"What? It's not like it was my choice to have dinner with the Cole's," he replied. Ever since the night we met Riley out of her good girl state, I have been having a hard time on my opinion of her. Sure, that act was fake but I don't think anyone has gotten to know the real Riley Cole. Riley isn't a good girl, she's a bad girl.
"Tell me, what do you think of her?" I asked Michael.
"Well, uh, I don't know. I was talking to her during English and she seems pretty cool. She liked bands, too. Green Day and Blink-182," he said. I raised my eyebrow.
"I would never have guessed her likes bands. She seems more of the Katy Perry and Lana Del Rey type," I replied.
"You really don't know a person, Luke." I shrugged, entering the cafeteria before seating myself down in our usual table spot. Calum, Ashton, and Jessica were sitting with Maria nowhere to be seen.
"Where's Maria?" Michael asked
"At home, sick. She said she had the flu," Calum responded.
"That chick digs you," I said to Calum. He laughed. "I'm serious."
"I don't think I could ever like Maria in that way. She's like a little sister to me and dating your sibling is plain gross," he retorted.
"Oh wow, Maria is going to be so devastated," Jessica said. Calum took a bite of his pizza.
"Can't help what I feel, Jess."
"I'm going to go for a little while, okay?" That was all Michael said before he stood up and sat down at the table kind of close to us. The occupant just so happened to be Riley.
"What's he doing with her?" Jess asked.
"You don't know?" Ashton asked her.
"Know what?" she furrowed her eyebrows, confused.
"Riley Cole isn't good, she's bad. Luke, Calum, Michael, and I found her in a short skirt and high heels at a party in the alleyway near her house. She swears and drinks, so not a good girl," he explained. Jess' eyes went wide.
"Where the fuck have I been?"
"Everyone's talking about it. I don't know, her new vibe makes me feel intimidated," Calum said. I stayed quiet, listening.
"This is weird," Jessica said.
"Not as weird as the look Luke gave her," said Calum. I whipped my head to look at him.
"What's that supposed to mean?" I asked.
"I mean you think Riley's hot and nothing but hot. Come on, Mikey and Ashton even saw that look you gave her when she walked away. You were staring at her."
"I was shocked, that was all," I argued.
"Sure, shocked, I totally believe you." I rolled my eyes.
"This still doesn't change the fact that I hate her," I said.
"Why? She's different and not the way you used to think of her," said Ashton.
"You're right. I don't hate her, I just strongly dislike her. Plus, she's getting all the attention from the student body," I scoffed. Jessica rolled her eyes.
"Your reputation is all you care about," she said. I chuckled.
"As of now, yes. Not going to lie, she has really good legs," I said. Jessica slapped my shoulder and continued eating her pasta. Michael came back and I scooted so he had room to sit.
"I just want to go home," he said.
"Only so you can go and see Riley outside of school," I sneered. Michael raised his eyebrow.
"What is up with you?" he asked.
"Nothing," I curtly said. He rolled his eyes.
"That's such bullshit," he replied. I could tell Michael was already getting frustrated with me. "Oh I know, is it because you finally found a girl who won't fall to your feet? Because this girl actually happens to have morals?" I didn't take what he said to heart. He's just angry. I did, however, stare at him for a couple of seconds because standing up from my seat to walk out of the cafeteria. My face was probably bright red. Next thing I knew, there was a hand on my shoulder.
"What?" I snapped as I turned around quickly. Riley took her hand off of my shoulder, slowly placing it at her side.
"Are you okay? Stupid question, I know you're not," she said.
"I'm fine," I gritted. She shook her head.
"No you're not." We reached the outside of the cafeteria and Riley was the last person I wanted to be with. I walked towards my locker -which happens to be by the janitors closet- in hopes of escaping her.
"What do you want?"
"I just thought I'd come by to see if you were okay. No one else was," she explained. I looked around and sighed.
"Riley, go back to your lunch mate," I said, picking up my pace. She didn't budge and walked to match my pace.
"Listen, I don't like you very much but I also don't like it when people are angry. From what I've observed of you, you're probably going to do something stupid."
"Why the fuck would you think I'd so something stupid?" She raised her eyebrow. A couple of weeks ago, I slammed my hand into the wall because I got into an argument with another guy over some stupid thing I can't remember. I sighed and shook my head.
"Fine, whatever. I'm not okay. Happy?" I retorted.
"Well, we're off to a good start."
"Just because you changed your entire look and you have a completely different personality, doesn't mean we're friends. This doesn't change the fact that I still don't like you, got it?" I was not in the mood to make friends with someone who I disliked.
Riley slowly nodded, ducking her head and mumbled 'got it' before scurrying back into the cafeteria. I tugged at my hair and sat down in the empty hallway. Was Michael right? Reputation is important to me. It lets people know my status in these hallways. Everyone cares who they appear to be to the student body and over the years, I've accumulated all the attention to go towards the "popular" notion. I didn't like Riley in the first place since she was "shy". Obviously that's not her and obviously we all thought wrong about everything we knew about Riley. She bugged me because of how she was so willing to stick to the rules, so willing to have good grades and live her life safely.
I shook all thoughts out of my head before standing up to walk to my locker, opening it, and grabbed a bag of crisps.
I hope that the school day is over soon.
