modern au - here goes nothing (jason's 13 here)

"hey jason," mendel sat on jason's bed where he played an extremely loud game on his phone.

"hey," he said blankly.

"these damn phones," mendel thought to himself,"these kids no longer properly socialize!"

"wanna go play some ball," mendel asked.

"no thanks," jason replied without skipping a beat.

"how about go see a movie? detective pikachu? come on," mendel was desperate. he nudged jason's shoulder.

"im good," he said.

"you know what! let's have a conversation! a good old heart to heart," mendel slapped his thighs while staring at jason.

"im good, but thanks," jason kept tapping on his device. mendel decided it was time to pull his parental authority card, he didn't want to, but he had to.

"it wasn't option, jason. put down your phone for a bit, alright!"

he did as he was told. "now what," he asked in monotone.

"well, uhm, tell me about school," mendel smiled and leaned on the wall.

"it's school," jason replied.

"any girls? huh," mendel poked at him.

"n-no," jason stammered.

"ah, that means yes," mendel chuckled,"what's her name?"

"id rather not tell you," jason rolled his eyes.

"what? what am i gonna do? break into her house? call up her parents and set up a play date," it was now mendel's turn to roll his eyes,"you can trust me kid."

"okay, well," jason started and made sharp, serious eye contact with mendel,"her name is carly. she's in my math and science classes. she's smart, pretty tall, blonde, and has glasses. she- she always does this thing where she twirls her hair but, but it gets stuck in her glasses and she has to like pull them out, and i feel bad but it's also kind of cute! then she's also super intelligent and super duper smart. we were paired for math once and she was way ahead of me, and im pretty good at math!"

"w- she- sounds wonderful jaso-"

"she's also always alone! she has like two girl friends but they usually go off together. i want to talk to her but im also too afraid to! you get it right," jason takes a huge, deep breath as he finishes his rambling.

"yeah, of course, yeah, i get it," mendel smiles and chuckles at jason's frantic ways.

jason's face soon flushed as he realizes what he's just blabbered to his stepdad. "well- what do you like about mom," jason inquired, very proud of his question.

"that's-," mendel clasped his hands together,"that was quite unexpected."

"well, go on," jason teased. mendel didn't want to reply but he knew he had to or jason would go back to playing on his phone.

"i like how she treats you. i like how mature she is, yet can have fun and isn't afraid to express her emotions. she's kind hearted and has spunk. she also has a great smile, i see that smile in you a lot," mendel put a hand on jason's shoulder and massaged it lightly,"and i saw her going through a lot. she was very strong."

jason smiled," is that all?" jason was now genuinely invested. his attitude was down the drain.

"well, the list could go on forever, couldn't it. im sure you get it," mendel mocked.

"yeah- im sure it could," jason giggled and sat closer to mendel.

"you know what, you have something in common with me that my other dads don't," jason stated.

"oh yeah, what would that be," mendel asked.

"an attraction to girls," jason laughed, and hard. mendel joined him.

"boys! dinner in 10," trina shouted from downstairs.

"we'll be there," mendel replied. "good talk, kid," mendel put his hand on jason's knee.

"same to you," jason said and hugged the older male. mendel felt as if he'd explode.

he dashed out of the room as soon as their embrace was broken.

"babe-" mendel called to trina.

"what? what's got you so excited," she asked with a slight laugh.

"he called me- indirectly, but hE CALLED ME DAD!!"
