Chapter Thirteen

"Are you ready?" Nathan asked me. I glanced over at him before I squared my shoulders and nodded defiantly.

"Yes." He smiled and then allowed me to climb out of the car. I head to the mall, wondering if this really was such a great idea? I was meeting with Mr. Diggory with no one with me. Well, other than the hundreds of shoppers...

Callum wanted to drop me off but Nate convinced him that Callum would blow cover by worrying too much. So Callum locked himself up in his room while Zee and Kiley waited with Luke at home. Nathan promised to come with me. It gave me little comfort.

I marched into the building, heading straight for the food court. I wanted to find Mr. Diggory and schedule a meeting for us. Nathan grabbed my hand and looked at me with concern and eager eyes. "Take deep breaths, Basia. You look like you are going to faint." He smiled softly. I laughed nervously and then nodded. Be cool, Basia. Be cool.

I took a deep breath and then walked around with Nathan by my side. We kept our eyes open for him. Callum says he works in the mall and now should be his lunch break... What if he doesn't here? Nonsense... he must. Why would someone go anywhere else when mostly every thing is right here.

Nathan dragged me to McDonalds and we both bought drinks. I kept looking for Mr. Diggory.

That's when I felt someone slip something in my back pocket. I nibbled on my bottom lip and looked behind me to see him walking swiftly away. I scrunched my eyebrows together but then took the letter. I peeled it opened.

Meet me tonight, at the pier. Eight o'clock. Or Nathan dies. I felt my mouth drop open as I spun around to face Nate. But he wasn't there. I began to panic as I shook my head quickly. No. This cannot be happening. How could he have gotten Nathan without me noticing?!

Crinkling the note, I shoved it back in my pocket as I ran out of the food court. I yanked out my phone and called Callum. He answered on the first ring.

"What happened?" He asked right away. I began to cry at the sound of his voice. He was so worried and concerned.

"He took Nathan. Please get me. Now." I whispered. He agreed but never disconnected the call. I heard him storm through the house, get in his car and then speed all the way over to me. I closed my eyes, listening to his heavy breathing.

"I'll kill him." He growled.

"In time, you will. Be patient, Callum." I told him. That's when I saw his Camaro pull into the mall's parking lot. He parked in front of me and hopped out, looking at me with bewildered eyes.

He grabbed my face and kissed my forehead gently. "Are you okay?" He asked. I nodded slowly, causing him to breathe before he pushed me to the passenger side of the car. "Where is the meeting place?" He asked me when we were a good distance away from the mall.

"The pier at eight." I told him. Callum shook his head and cursed quietly. He glared over at me as his knuckles turned white on the steering wheel.

"I hate this." He gritted out between set teeth. I sighed and reached over for his hand, giving it an encouraging squeeze.

"You'll reach me in time before he could ever hurt me." I whispered. He ignored me as we pulled into Zee's house. We climbed out and walked together, hand in hand, toward the house. We were greeted by a frantic Kiley, concerned Zee and calm but frustrated Luke.

"He'll pay." Luke growled. Callum grunted as he pulled me into the living room. We sat down on the couch together, wrapped in each other's arms. Zee hugged Luke as she cried while Kiley sat frozen in a Lazy Boy. This guy needs to die. He has no right to take Nate. He sure as hell will pay for what he has done.
