The Drought

Candimonium wasn't always like this, let me explain. About seven years ago there was a huge drought which lasted for five whole years. The whole town was frightened. Everyone started to panic, wondering how they would survive, and not only them but also the plants and animals. It seemed almost impossible to survive.
Luckily the humans were smart enough to conserve water and managed to ration it out so that it would last at least five more years. But the animals could not be taken care of as human lives came first. Slowly they all became endangered, and some even became extinct. The birds, dogs, cats, squirrels, cows, everything. Then the plants went. No one knew what to do. How was humanity supposed to survive without anything to eat and barely any water?
The town soon went into a great scare. Everyone started stealing food making sure not to leave even a crumb. People would do anything to survive. All order was gone and the town was in complete panic mode. The mayor had no clue what he could possibly do to stop this madness. He brainstormed for days upon weeks.
Meanwhile, in the streets, it was common to see people fighting Each other and leaving their children on the streets. Everyone became selfish, and the world turned into a game with every man of himself. The elderly and small children couldn't survive without help.
now that you've got a general idea to let's get a bit more specific. On the 5th floor of a rundown apartment building lived Kai Poist. A 15-year-old boy who lived with his mother, father, and his four little sisters. His family was struggling to survive and get any food on the table for dinner. They all sat at their small table with barely enough space to sit all seven of them. They each had three mint leaves they were nibbling on. Each and every one of them was exhausted and tired of surviving off of the little they had.
Once they were all done Kai walked over to the window and looked across the street. There was a small building with glass windows and a worn purple awning. On the inside, all you could see was cobwebs and dust. The building was the remains of the Poist family's bakery. Every morning they used to walk across the street and make delicious baked goods like croissants, bagels, cookies, cupcakes, And various kinds of bread. But that was all in the past. Because of the drought bread became even more rare than gold. Soon after the drought started the Poist family was without a job and left poor. Since they went out of business they have been living off the few materials they had left from their shop. At least what wasn't stolen, as people acted like animals these days and all of the shops had been stolen from at some point.
Every night before bed Kai would sit at the window looking at the building wishing things would go back to the way it used to be. He wanted a better life for him and his family. They were one of the only families still together and it ripped his heart apart thinking what would happen if they ever got separated. Suddenly he heard footsteps behind him and quickly turned around.
"Hey kai," his dad said as he sat down next to him. He looked out the window to see the old bakery. He looked straight into Kai's deep brown eyes and said "We all miss it. And I promise I will do everything I can to keep this family together."
Kai leaned to the side and placed his head on his dad's shoulder holding back tears. His dad rubbed his shoulder while saying "it's going to be ok, trust me." But Kai didn't believe him, and the countless other people who kept on spreading the news that the drought would be over soon and everything would go back to normal. Because even if the drought ended, what was normal anymore?
