"Kaiiiii" I heard someone say as I was being shaken to wake up.
"What do you want," I said with my eyes half-closed.
"You have to wake up now come on!"
I sat up and rubbed my eyes. Cassie my four-year-old sister was sitting in front of me. She's the sweetest little girl and I love her to death. Her light brown hair was in pigtails and she looked straight up at me with her deep brown eyes.
I stood up and grabbed Cassie's hand as we walked to the living room together. Mom was in there cleaning up the few toys Cassie had. Technically they used to be mine but she still likes playing with them anyway.
"Morning mom," I said to her.
"Good morning honey, how did you sleep?"
"Good for the most part. Did dad already leave?"
Oh, I don't think I explained. Every day the whole family goes out to find food. Besides my mom because she has to stay home to watch Cassie since she is only four. Normally we don't find much but sometimes we can find a few scraps.
"Not yet but he's leaving in about ten minutes so get ready quickly," Mom responded.
I went back into my room and grabbed a pair of my worn-out jeans and one of my t-shirts that hadn't been totally destroyed from wearing them so much. I went back into the kitchen and met my dad there.
"You ready guys?" Dad said to me and my sister while opening the door.
"Yeah, where are we headed first," I asked.
"Well, I figured we could go towards the old grocery store and maybe a couple of gas stations."
As we walked along Ashlynn was humming as per usual. Ashlynn is thirteen and loves theater. She would do anything to go and see Broadway but we can't afford any tickets to take her. Maybe one day she would join a local production. That was if we had any.
Ashlynn's twin sister, Elizabeth, was totally different. She would play any sport you put in front of her. She is super competitive it's kind of scary sometimes. Sadly we don't have any athletic teams anymore.
Despite the two of them being total opposites I still get them confused sometimes. They look pretty much identical. With their long dark brown hair and freckles. The only difference was Ashlynn has heterochromia. While Elizabeth has two brown eyes Ashlynn has one brown one green.
My last sister is Brooke. She is ten years old and is full of personality. She is always talking about the most random things. She is so goofy and could probably get a job as a comedian. You can't be sad when you are around her. It's pretty nice to have her still making jokes even in such rough times.
"Kai you keep going down the road with the twins while I and Brooke stay and look here."
The three of us continued walking for a little while more until we reached an old rundown gas station.   We looked around a bit but I didn't find anything.
"I'm going to head up a bit farther you guys stay here," I said.
I walked until I found an abandoned house with a small garden in the yard. The garden was empty but still fenced in. I stuck my hands in my pockets and walked over to the house. I felt something weird in my pocket and pulled it out. It was a small seed but I'm not sure what it would grow.
How did that get there I thought to myself. I don't remember having any seeds. I walked over to the garden and opened the gate. I jumped when the gate closed behind me. Normally I get scared of the tiniest things. Like if I wasn't paying attention then someone calls my name it will probably frighten me.
Anyway, I crouched down in the middle of the gardens and dug a small hole about an inch deep with my hand. I placed the small seed in the hole and covered it up. I doubted it would grow at all but it was worth a shot.
I stood up and opened the gate to leave. Again it made a loud clanging noise as it shut and yet again I jumped even while watching it close.
I began to walk back towards my sister's, planning on coming back to the garden tomorrow. Even if it was growing you wouldn't see anything above ground tomorrow but I could still maybe find a little bit of water for it. Who knows maybe for once in my life things could go my way.
