As I slide lipstick over my bottom lip, I can't help feeling like I'm preparing for war. My reflection can not lie to me. I'm worried.
Bishop is the star player, but he's always had Matt by his side. They were always two well oiled machines that knew each other's next move on the field. My fear was that Bishop's head wasn't going to be in the game later on today.
I wear his away jersey tied tight around my hips. The weather called for rain, which is why I threw on a grey long-sleeved shirt underneath, paired with black jeans and nike runners.
Bishop wore his home jersey with light washed jeans. His bag had been packed the day before. He was vying to compete.
"I love you," I say as I watch him comb his hair back.
His eyes shift to me in the bathroom mirror.
"Why do you say that like it's the last time?" He asked sadly.
I laugh and squeeze his butt.
"It's the last time I say it to just a regular man," I giggle at his confused and somewhat offended look. "The next time I say it, it'd better be to a champion."
His stern look changes to one of humour challenge. Bishop spins, wraps his arms around me, and lifts.
"I could always make you say it again, you know," he pointed out.
"Try it."

The rain is pouring lightly when we arrive at school, but that doesn't stop the pre school festivities. Cheerleaders welcome the students, handing out free mini packs of paint and foam fingers.
"Support your team! Wooo!"
They kick and yell and one even drops into a twerk.
I rolled my eyes while passing the twerker and fought my natural instinct to join in.
The halls were more alive than usual. You could feel the energy racing through the halls. This wasn't a normal school day and the students were in high spirits. The dark cloud followed over us, reminding Bishop and I of what is to come.
Bishop clasped hands with men from his team as we made our way to our lockers. They greeted each other with "you ready for this?" ,"let's do this!", and some went the more simple root and decided to bark like wild dogs ready for battle.
"Please never do that," I glared at the barkers still woofing away.
Bishop threw his head back with genuine laughter, stealing my gaze away from the teenage wolves. His face lightened for a moment and I craved to see more of it.
He didn't let himself laugh for long, though. He was still angry about me taking his drugs and handing them over to the junkie.
When I had returned home after hours of drug dealing, he had been pacing back and forth while talking on the phone to someone.
He had heard the door click shut before pouncing on me with questions. He stopped himself before he said something he would regret though. For that, I was grateful.
-------------------------------------------------
The day went by uneventful. The teachers went easy on their lectures and homework and the students were in too good of moods to be testy.
