"You go first" Susie nudged Kris nervously towards the steps to the door.
Kris was nervous as well but he didn't show it.
He knocked three bold knocks on the cracked white door.
A buff mauve-colored monster approached holding a glass bottle. The door opened with a small unnerving creak.
"What do you want?" he asked apathetically, eyeing Kris up and down.
Kris wrinkled his nose at the smell that wafted into his face. The man obviously had been drinking himself to numbness.
He straightened up a bit and cleared his throat, "I'm here to talk to you about the way you've been treating your daughter."
Susie, as if on cue, slowly peeped her head out from behind Kris, revealing herself with a nervous expression.
The man scoffed, swiveling the liquid around inside the bottle. "Who are you to tell me what to do, kid?"
"Please, just five minutes of your time, sir. I won't bother you again after this" Kris pleaded, grinning ever so slightly to try and persuade him.
The taller monster sighed lowly, stepping back to let them inside. "Fine. Five minutes and you're out. This better not be any funny business, 'yall hear?"
He sat them down around the table and propped his feet upon it. "Start talkin'"
Susie sat with her hands shoved in her lap, staring down at herself silently.
Kris, on the other hand, was sitting up straight, like he did when they'd get out the clipboard and discuss their issues.
"Let's start with an introduction, I guess. I'm Kris; Susie's friend"
The monster stretched out a bit and got comfy. "I'm Spencer, but that isn't important to you."
"Alright. I'm gonna get straight to the point since we're limited on time here;" Kris drummed his nails against the rounded table.
"Sir, it seems you've been a bit harsh on your daughter here," he started, his voice gentle.
Spencer raised a dull eyebrow at the boy. "You don't have the place to tell me what I've done wrong," he said with no hint of emotion.
"Actually, I do, if it's interfering with how it affects Susie" Kris backed himself up.
"I've done nothing wrong, kiddo. I'm doin' just fine without someone telling me what to do" he growled, taking a long swig from his bottle.
"Dad, you attempted to hit me. More than once on many occasions." Susie mumbled, finally finding the courage to say something.
Spencer slid his empty bottle across the table, leaning further back in his rickety chair. "Mm? You gave me a good reason to."
"I really didn't..." she barely whispered, leaning further back into her seat.
"No matter the reason, you shouldn't ever hit her! Verbal abuse is one thing, but physical is something I can get the police involved with." Kris raised his voice a bit but calmed himself back down quickly. glancing at Susie to make sure she was still doing okay, which she was.
The buff monster grunted, sitting upright in his chair now. His face remained straight, but Kris could see the sudden fear swirling in his eyes.
This is exactly what he wanted.
"You can't do that, where's the proof of me ever hurting her?" he spat aggressively, unaware of all the backup Susie had prepared for this very moment.
Susie stood suddenly, rolling her long sleeve up to reveal a noticeable bruise littering her arm.
"Got it right here."Her father sputtered, his expression turning to anger. He thought he had hit her lightly enough it wouldn't leave a mark.
He had done it before. Maybe he was getting too aggressive now...
"You've hit me so many times before. This is all the proof I need."
Kris blinked and stared wide-eyed. He never knew her father actually went through with all his threats.
What kind of sick monster would do that?
"Fine. We'll make us a deal, 'ya hear?" Spencer growled, crossing his arms menacingly. "I'll leave 'er be if you keep this between us and only us. Got it?"
"You've got one chance, sir. Susie will tell me everything if you attempt anything else." Kris looked over at the smaller monster, who gave him a tiny nod.
"You've got my word." Spencer smiled oddly sweetly.
His fake smile dropped to his typical scowl very quickly, sarcastically almost.
"Now get out of my house. Both of 'ya"
Kris stood and helped Susie back to her own feet. "Glad we could settle things!" he said somewhat cheerily, walking to leave.
Susie turned to glance at her father once before she left. He looked back with a hint of guilt glistening in the reflection of his beady eyes.
She squinted at him and closed the door behind her, knowing he'd just drink until he forgot their whole ordeal.
