It felt strange to come back to this place after so long. Despite the years, Tony could still remember everything. But at that moment, when standing in front of Steve with the shield between his hands and conferring it back to him, he could only think about the time he had been cracked, broken and hurt in the hands of its owner.
He had to hinder himself from boring into the past. That's what that has to be left to rot. He was optimistic about the mission they were going to embark on and knowing that by the sullen look on the soldier's face he was welcomed back by, something had gone astray. They had hope yet by now, he would have stamped it right out them. He wasn't here for that. He was here to help.
'Tony,' Steve said, hesitant as he looked at the shield. There was humiliation, an insight of chagrin as he fisted his hands by his sides.
'Why? He made it for you,' he stated without animosity. Howard Stark had made it for Steve Rogers. Period. That was the truth Tony would never deny, how much ever it bugged him on the inside.
'Plus, honestly, I have to get it out of the garage before Margo takes it sledging.'
A flash of amusement stretched over Steve's gaunt features, lifting the shield back into position over his forearm. It was where it was meant to be with the person who it was constructed for. Steve stood taller, looking at Tony with a grateful smile.
'Thank you, Tony.'
'Keep it under wraps, though,' he murmured wryly. 'Didn't bring one for the whole team. We are getting the whole team, right?'
'That depends,' Steve mused, tilting his head. 'Is Eleanor coming?'
'Oh, Elle's here,' Tony chuckled under his breath, reaching to the handle of the backseat and tugging it open. Steve took a step back to view further only to see a situation he would've never guessed. First of all, Steve had never seen her like that so was in bit of a shock.
