I stared blankly at the whiteboard.  Mr. Johnson rattled on in science language.  I was so tired, my only focus was keeping my eyes open.  Oh, but it was like he wasn't even speaking English.  There was no way I would be able to focus, or get any sort of grade except an F in this class.  I leaned back in my chair a little more, attempting to get comfortable.  No, I don't want to get comfortable, or I'd fall asleep.  I opened my notebook and pretended to be taking notes when really I was trying to write a poem for English class.

The bell finally rang and I jumped up along with everyone else and shoved my things into my backpack.  As soon as I entered the hall, someone shoved me up against the wall as they rushed by and I couldn't start on my way to the next class until the rush of students had ended.  As soon as I could, I left the wall and ran to the lockers.  Yes, I know I'm not supposed to run, but I'll be late for the next class if I don't.

That night, when I came home from work, I wearily unsaddled Thunder.  I suddenly heard voices, happy ones, that sounded familiar.  I heard a giggle which I hadn't heard before and a laugh that I knew by heart, I dumped Thunder's oats in his bin and tip toed out and around the stable.  You will never guess who I saw.

Selina's POV: many hours earlier at the elegant lunch

Mother sat rigidly to my left and some cute boy sat to my right.  I slouched in my chair and ignored everything that was happening around me.  The only up side in these lunches is that I get good food.  The food that that stupid Iris makes is sort of good, but there's not really any flavour.  I can guess what's in anything she makes.  These expensive foods though, they are works of art.

I suddenly felt Mother's sharp elbow in my side and instantly sat up straight.  I was supposed to flirt with the guy beside me.  I guess it's not all bad this time, he is cute.  But I like Jacob better, and Mother will not chose which guy I like, that's where I'm putting my foot down.  She gets to control everything else, but I have the power to expose her for what she did to Father.  She's a monster and I hate her.  I won't flirt with the boy and there's nothing Mother can do about it.

I raised my nose in the air and slipped another tomato in my mouth before getting up and making my way to the bathroom.  I could feel Mother's death glare on me as I left the cheery, spacious dinning room and tried to make my way through the richly decorated halls.  I finally found what looked like a bathroom and went inside, locking the door behind myself and sliding to the floor against the door.  It was a tool closet.  Oh, well, it'll work.  All I needed to do was appear like I was going to the bathroom.  No one really cares anyway.

I let my mind wander and found my thoughts turning darker than they already were.  I hated Mother, and she knew it.  She wouldn't hesitate to hurt me, or Georgie.  The little brat doesn't care if Mother hurts me, but I'll still do almost anything to protect her.  I wish she had my back, but no one does.  And Iris only makes things worse.  I'm on my own.

I blinked hard as I felt tears threatening themselves.  I won't cry; Mother will never get the best of me.

Iris is an idiot.  She should have figured it out by now.  It's probably for the best, I mean she does help Georgie with the chores.  But she's still a stupid idiot.

"No, your the idiot."  I whispered.

You didn't stand up for Father or Georgie.  Your just taking your frustration with yourself out on Iris and Georgie.  Well, it's going to stay like that because if I change more than I already have in one month, Mother will kill me.

You better get back to the table, just in case Mother decides to leave you here.  I pushed myself from the floor and left the closet, sauntering confidently through the fancy halls.  I barely remembered the way back, but thankfully found the dinning room again, just as Mother was leaving.  I folded my arms and leaned against a wall.  I glared at the boy I was supposed to flirt with; he ignored me.  I don't care, I reminded myself, leaving the room and trying to find my way to the front door.

Mother came up behind me a few minutes later.  She was silent now, but I could almost feel her blood boiling.  I was going to get it once we entered the truck.  I don't care, I reminded myself again, she's a witch of a mother.  I stared straight ahead and when the butler opened the huge front doors I exited without skipping a beat.  Mother sent one of them a charming smile, but I could see right through her.  She's full of flattery and will do anything to get and keep the things she wants.  Anything.
