Chapter 18

Molly

I had hoped everyone made it home last night but no such luck. Standing in the doorway of my living room, looking at the destruction, there are passed out baseball players on the couches, chair and floor. Apparently, either no one planned for a driver, they were all too drunk to move and passed out or Dillon gave them the okay to sleep here. It could be a mixture of all options. I don't have time to ponder it. There's a fire to put out at Nate's house. And her name is Carla.

Stepping carefully over the sleeping bodies scattered over my living room floor, I make my way to the kitchen for coffee before I head to Nate's. I need to get there early so I can talk to Kayleigh. Maybe I can help salvage what Carla tried to screw up for my dear brother again. Hopefully, I get there before she does, in case it's worse than I think.

I look over at my couch and see a sleeping Reese. He looks so young and peaceful laying there. I've seen Reese sleep many times. And every time I want to run my fingers through his soft hair and kiss those soft pink lips awake. But I know what it feels like to kiss him now. It's nothing like I thought it would be. It's better, powerful, electric even. There's an energy, a pull that I feel from him, and it scares me. I need to keep my distance.

Pouring my coffee into a very large travel mug, I head out without waking the sleeping beauties. As I head to Nate's, I think about last night and that kiss with Reese. There was something about that kiss that has me frazzled. I felt something I never have and that scares me. Reese has proven time and again that he can easily break my heart. I can't feel anything for him more than friendship. It would only end badly for me.

As I drive up to the house, I don't see any extra cars in the drive. Nor do I see the Lexus that Kayleigh is using. This is good news for me so far, but I'm not convinced that there's no trouble inside. Finding Nate's door locked up and no sign of Kayleigh's car that I loaned her in the drive, I assume I've beaten anyone here. Which for me would be a good thing. I can wake up Nate and see exactly what happened last night.  Then we know how to fix it.

Walking in the door, I don't even get inside when the trouble stares me in the face. I didn't expect to find Kayleigh standing there in the middle of a stare down with Carla. Who looks all too smug with her high heels in hand, makeup smudged, and the dress she wore last night not even zipped up.

"What the hell are you doing here?" I growl, looking at the hurt look on Kayleigh's face to Carla's disgusting smile.  She wasn't expecting me to show up. I can see I took the crazy bitch off guard. She quickly hides it though.

"I was just leaving. We had a very late night last night and Nate's still sleeping. I didn't want to wake him, he really exerted himself so much for me last night. He really needs to rest that ankle. You understand that? Right, Kayleigh?" Carla directed the question specifically to her and made a point of saying Kayleigh's name rather deliberately. As if she's making a big point.

I look at Kayleigh and watch her flinch immediately. Yep, Carla is trying to do something here. I know Carla's tactics, she likes to intimidate other women, especially if she feels threatened. I'm guessing Kayleigh has threatened her territory this week. Nate must have finally gotten some balls.

"It's his knee, you brainless bimbo! Now give me the keys, Carla? Don't make me rekey this place again because of you." I hold out my hand and wait.

Wiggling my fingers for her to put the keys in my hand. I've had enough of her games. If Nate doesn't put an end to her antics, I'm not working for him anymore. I've had enough of Carla and all the bull she carries.
