There I was, sitting at the Robyn's kitchen table with the rest of her family. Her and I on one side, her two brothers on the other and her parents on either end. For dinner we had grilled chicken and a side of caesar salad. It wasn't as awkward as I had expected, there were a few uncomfortable silences but other than that it was fine.
"So Noah, Robyn told us you moved here over a month ago, where did you move from?" Asked her dad.
"Before moving here, my family lived in Poland." I nodded.
"You have no trace of a Polish accent." He shrugged.
"Well, my dads a military officer so we were positioned there for a few years." I explained.
"Oh alright, so you're not going to be around here for long?" He asked.
"Actually this is our last stop." I smiled.
"That's good, then we don't have to worry about losing you." Smiled her mom.
I just slightly laughed. Robyn looked at me sadly but I just tried my hardest to keep a small smile on my face. I guess they didn't have to worry about me moving away, but there was still the chance of death due to my SIS. As her mother began speaking to her brothers I slightly leaned over to her.
"Do they know?" I asked in a whisper.
She shook her head.
"I thought it was something you'd want to be kept private." She nodded.
Let's just hope that nothing bad happens, the last thing I want to do is explain to my girlfriends family that I got a life threatening syndrome from getting ganged up on by a bunch of guys for attacking their friend. Stop it Noah, stop thinking, it's messing with your head. Just focus on enjoying this time with Robyn's family, her lovely, perfect, well put together family. My family would be the same if it weren't for Jayden. I sighed. Robyn looked over at me.
"Are you ok?" She asked quietly.
I nodded and took a sip of my water.
"So, your dad is a military officer, what about your mom?" Jacob asked.
"She works from home, she orders product for stores." I nodded.
"What about siblings? Do you have any siblings?" He asked.
I stared at him for a second, then I just simply shook my head. It broke my heart to say I didn't have a sibling, even though it's true. I've lost her.
Robyn looked at me and then over to Jacob looking slightly angry. His eyes widened and everyone grew quiet, you could hear a pin drop. Her mother knew something was up and decided to change the subject as quickly as possible.
"So, I heard you two will be Sandy and Danny for your school play." She smiled.
I smiled at her and nodded.
"Are you excited?" She asked.
"Yeah, this is my first theatre performance." I nodded.
"Really? That's so exciting." Smiled her mom.
I nodded.
After dinner I checked my phone and it was now just after seven.
"I should get going." I sighed.
She nodded.
I packed up my stuff, kissed Robyn on the cheek and made my way back home. I walked in the house and it was quiet. I looked over to the couch and saw my mom sitting there in silence.
"Hey mom." I sighed.
She looked back at me and smiled.
"Good evening." She nodded.
"Is everything alright?" I asked.
"Yeah, everything is absolutely fine." She nodded nervously as she crumpled a piece of paper and shoved it in her pocket.
"What's that?" I asked.
"Noah, don't worry about it." She sighed shaking her head.
"Mom, what's going on?" I asked.
"Nothing is going on." She exclaimed.
"Please don't lie to me." I begged.
"Are you feeling ok?" She asked.
"Don't try to pull that bullshit with me!" I yelled.
"What are you talking about?" She asked.
"Don't try to make it seem like I'm losing my mind. I know that you're hiding something from me, why can't you just tell me what it is!?" I yelled.
"Noah, I don't want you to see it." She sighed.
"Please." I begged.
She handed me the crumpled piece of paper and tried my best not to rip it. It was a note, I read it over. My hands become shaky.
"Mom." I sighed.
"I'm sorry Noah." She sighed.
"I-is this real?" I asked.
She nods.
Oh god.
