Damn, Dryads

I can hear Circe's curse and feel her rolling of eyes when the Dryads increase in number.

But I thought you said they were friendly.

She huffed, as I awkwardly smiled at them.

Overly friendly, I should have added.

"I'm Daphnaie, dryad of the laurel trees. What brings you to the forest, Circe?"

She's calling you out, Circe. I mocked her, emphasizing her name. Hearing her huff, I chuckled inwardly.

"I'm Xianne. And I was looking for spare logs, to build a fire. Circe wanted some rabbit meat."

Daphnaie nodded, looking at her friend, who was standing on the small branch. "Meliae, do you have a few ash logs to spare?"

She didn't say anything but disappeared behind the tree. Observing them, they all looked like spirits, their figures were translucent. They have eyes like deep green moss, and their skin is bark-textured but it varies, probably because of which tree they belong to.

Daphnaie, had a lighter bark skin paralleled to her laurel tree, while Meliae had a darker bark skin, matching the ash tree. Their hairs however are similar, it's like a leaf cap on their heads. Soft as fern and a few had tiny blossoms of flowers while the others had birds nest in them.

"You Dryads look amazing," I whispered, looking at them in awe.

"Is this the first time you have seen us?"

"Yes. I didn't know someone like you guys existed."

"Do you want to take a walk? While my friends gather what you need?"

Her feet looked like the roots of a tree, merging seamlessly with the forest floor. As we walked, the other dryads followed us, their steps swayed like saplings in the wind and left no trace, only faint imprints in the loam.

"They won't need my help?"

"Oh, we don't. But you do."

I only smiled and looked at where we were going.

"How do you know Circe?" I wondered, her green eyes lit up. Enthusiastic of answering.

"I can sense that you were the great-granddaughter of Magus Gwydion. He was our enigmatic hero, he saved this forest from fire and planted more trees with his magic."

"And you easily entered our realm, it must've been visible to your naked eye, but Magus Gwydion put a magical barrier to protect us. You see, other wizards wanted to hunt us dryads as their potion ingredients."

"Some had dark intentions, as we stopped aging at twenty-one. Some were jealous of our youth and hunted us to take the beauty and youth from within us."

"A lot of the forest were virgin and mystical. But the kingdoms don't know how to treat us. They kept asking for favors until one day we grew tired and didn't answer them. That's when the war between the kingdoms and dryads started."

"Some forests were under the kingdom's protection. Aves kingdom is a good kingdom, they have a large forest and cultivate it to house more dryads and trees. But some are dead forests. Where rogues are used as their bases."

"There's only five virgin forests left in this world. And I am afraid, we might lose a few more. As humans also now entered the forests."
