It was breakfast time in the great hall. The marauders were once again bickering over something when a grey owl fluttered down in front of Thalia, and solemnly held out its leg for her to take the letter attached.

"Hey, Darrell!" She cooed, stroking the large bird, which happened to be her Father's.

"Darrell?" Peter spluttered, holding back a laugh. "Why, of all names, Darrell?"

"Ask my Dad, I haven't got a clue." She shrugged. Gently removing the parchment from the owl's leg, she looked around the table. The girl received questioning stares, and she shrugged in response. The Marauders were as confused as she was - the girl rarely got letters from her parents since her expulsion from Ilvermorny. The others watched with concern as the normally fidgety girl stilled and her face morphed into one of horror. James looked over her shoulder to read the letter, and placed an arm around her shaking frame. It read;

Thalia,

Your Mother is incredibly ill, and has been for a while. We didn't want to tell you sooner, as this occurred around the time Thomas died, and we did not want to burden you any further. No wizards, nor muggles have a cure - your Mother and I have accepted that, as should you. I am sorry to ask this of you, however we feel it would be best if you returned home so she can spend her final days with you. You may bring a friend, as it will be a very difficult time when you have to say goodbye. Your Grandfather has gone looking for one last attempt to keep your Mother alive, however, you must not get your hopes up, as chances are, it will not work. Please owl back as soon as you can, she does not have long.

Love Dad x

The messy haired boy reached up to the girl's face, previous awkwardness forgotten and wiped a tear that was sliding down it. Her shaking had increased to the point where she could no longer hold the parchment, and it slipped between her fingers. Remus picked it up and read it, after she made no indication that he couldn't. Thalia was staring forwards, unresponsive to her friends repeatedly calling her name. She was numb. She couldn't process it. Not another death.

"Her dad's a bit blunt isn't he?" Remus whispered to Sirius, who had his arm around Eloise. The younger Potter had her hand over her mouth and tears in her eyes at the thought of her what her friend was going through.

"Thalia.." Peter whispered

"Thalia..." James tried.

"Thalia..." Eloise called.

"Thalia..." Remus pressed.

"Thalia..." Sirius nudged her.

She was entirely unresponsive. Her friends didn't know how to get through to her.

"Thals..." Eloise stood from her seat next to Sirius and sat beside her friend. "Come here." She said soothingly and wrapped her arms around her. Thalia finally showed signs of life as her arms wrapped around Eloise in return and she began crying into her shoulder.
