Masamune: "There. There's the tea house, and--" The smile disappeared from Masamune's face as he trailed off. What? And then I saw it too. Waiting at the tea house was Sasuke and one other--
Sasuke: "Mai! Over here!"
Yukimura: "Oh, hell--" Yukimura?! My stomach went rock hard. Sasuke gave Masamune the same look I was giving Yukimura. I did not expect this. I could feel the tension pouring off of Masamune without even touching him. His breathing still, he was a beast ready to pounce.
The two rivals were ten paces away, a distance I knew they could close in an instant. My bad! I never told Sasuke I was bringing Masamune with me!
Mai: "I'm sorry, Sasuke. I should have told you Masamune was coming too!" I winced as I called out my apology.
Sasuke: "No, not at all. I didn't realize I'd be coming with Yukimura either. Shingen caught me on my way out and suggested I take Yukimura with me for protection."
Mai: "Aww. Sounds like Shingen is a pretty thoughtful guy." . . . And this is NOT the time to be complimenting others on their thoughtfulness!
Sasuke: "Yes, but as it turns out, I think he made the trip twice as dangerous."
Mai: "Sasuke, you look kinda thrilled. Like a fan at a signing."
Sasuke: "The chance to see a second battle between the legendary Yukimura Sanada and Masamune Date? How could I not be?" Right. Sasuke was raised to be a Sengoku fanboy. "But Yukimura's been a really good friend to me. I'd like to send him back to Shingen without any injuries if that's possible."
Sasuke's obviously close with Kenshin, Shingen, and Yukimura. Just like how I am with Ieyasu and the other Azuchi warlords. Masamune was smiling at Yukimura, but it wasn't a friendly one.
Masamune: "Been a while, Yukimura. How've you been?"
Yukimura: "What are you even doing here?"
Masamune: "Protecting Mai. Didn't think I'd be put into action so quickly though."
Yukimura: "You're still the same old hot head." They both put their hands on the handles of their swords. Oh no. Oh no, they don't!
Mai: "Stop, stop, stop, stop!"
Both: "What?" "Why?!" Both of them turned to me.
Mai: "Calm down, both of you! Let's talk this over, okay? Sound good?"
Masamune: "I am calm. Are you sure you don't need to calm down?"
Mai: "Look, Yukimura is only here to see Sasuke off. He's not here because of Kenshin, or Shingen, or any of those guys. That means he's not your enemy, Masamune. He's like, a friend of a friend."
Yukimura: "Masamune's not Sasuke's friend. He tried to kill him."
Mai: "But you and Sasuke are friends. And I'm Sasuke's friend. And Masamune and I are, uh, we're working on the terminology. So that makes YOU a friend of the guy I'm sleeping with-- GAH! I mean--!"
Yukimura: "What are you even saying?"
Masamune: "Hey, lass--"
Mai: "Masamune, please. If you two fight, one of you is going to get hurt. I don't want Sasuke's last memories of this place being of his friend getting hurt. Okay?"
Masamune: "And you mean it?"
Mai: "Yes, of course, I do." Masamune told me I don't have to change. He knows. I know he likes my "naïveté" as well. "All I'm asking is that you don't fight during this trip to Kyoto. Besides, I don't want to see you get hurt either, Masamune."
