There were two bedrooms in the entire house. Maggie and Glenn decided to take one and Sasha and Bob would take the other. Carol and Daryl spread themselves out on the couch, their feet in each others faces which they both smiled about even though it was disgusting. Eugene laid up against the wall, with Abraham and Rosita taking the first watch. Rick cradled Judith while sitting in an incredibly comfy looking chair. Tara had the chair next to the fire place and was making quite a bunch of noise trying to get comfortable. Michonne slept on the carpeted floor as well as Tom.
Carl and I were just getting situated together on the floor - maybe we should wake up earlier than the rest... - when Maggie's head popped up from the corner. She looked directly at me and swiftly nodded her head in a forty five degree angle to the right to say follow me. I got up and looked at Carl who nodded his head at me. I stuck my pointer finger in the air to signal I'd be back soon.
I rounded the corner and walked out of the glass back door where I saw Maggie leaning over the railing. I walked next her her and stared out into the woods that littered the back if the neighborhood. A full moon was illuminating the sky that had random stars around making the galaxy look amazing. I wonder if it was true that every time a person died that a new star popped up. It was a cute thought, but not real. The reason there were so many more stars now was because pollution completely stopped when most of the world was eaten alive. I couldn't help but laugh at how beautiful the world is now, but how many people were lost in the journey to getting here. I could faintly see the wild daisies growing along the forest line. Bluntly beautiful.
Suddenly, I remembered that I wasn't all alone. I looked at Maggie who seemed troubled, but determined.
"I have to find her," Maggie told me through gritted teeth.
"We will," I reassured her... or tried to.
"She's the only blood I have left. Glenn - Glenn's different. Glenn's my world... but he's not my little sister." She shook her head trying to explain herself.
In retrospect, I probably should've said something that was helpful. But instead I said the first semi-funny thing that came to my mind, "I would hope not. That be awkward to explain if you got pregnant... and impossible to happen." She lightly laughed. "That's my nerdy way of saying: I get it. I know you miss her. And I do understand what you're going through. It's just me right now, and I have Carl and he helps... but he's not Charlotte. He's not my little sister."
"That'd be awkward to ex-" I cut her off with a jab to her left shoulder.
"Shut it," I laughed. "We'll find them," I said seriously.
"I hope so. Soooooo," She trailed with a devilish grin. "how is Carl?"
"Sheriff's fine."
"Fine?" She cocked an eyebrow. "Fine as in amaaaaaaaazing?"
"Fine as in shut it... once again." We both laughed.
"Alright, I'm backing off." She held both hands up.
"Thank you, by the way," I changed the subject. "No one who had said no to going would have wanted to go unless you said yes first. We would be figuring out ways to search all of Georgia if it weren't for you."
"No problem, but if it weren't for you and Tom we wouldn't have the slightest clue of where to look for Beth. And we'd all be dead so..."
I shrugged. "I wouldn't be alive without you guys either."
"We should probably get to bed, Glenn'll start to worry."
"Right. Yeah. Or you wanna make out with him," I grinned.
"You're turn to shut it." She playfully shoved me to the side ad we walked in the house.
"Night," I whispered as I made my way back to Carl.
"G'night." She quietly stepped into her room while I moved along.
I found Carl half asleep with a blanket covering him and the ground to his left. There were various pillows all over the floor. During the time when I was getting situated he mumbled hey, you have a nickname for me. I should have one for you... I'm gonna call you zombie slayer.
"Maybe you should sleep on that one," I suggested in a whisper.
"Alright," he said back and opened his eyes a little.
I pecked him on the cheek before I laid down on my back. Sheriff, evidently, had other plans because he took my waist and turned me to my left so we were spooning yet again. His hands found my hip bones and his fingers touched them in an almost drunk way. I tried my best to hold in a laugh and take his hand in mine. He just pulled me closer and hummed into the top of my neck. He had no idea what he did to me. God, he was such a tease.
"Such a tease!" I said so low I wasn't even sure I could hear it, but Carl was still conscious because I felt him smirk into my hair line and pull me just a little closer. I closed my eyes in contentment and fell into a dreamless rest.
We got up bright and early the next day. Too early for me.
"Tired, princess?" Daryl asked once I entered the dining room, where the rest of the group was eating breakfast and writing on papers and looking at maps.
"Don't think I won't shoot you," I snarled with a microscopic grin on my face.
"I see you smiling!" He laughed back.
For some reason it struck me that Daryl might joke a lot, but he didn't smile or laugh much at all. I was so happy that I indirectly made him chuckle that I really did smile as I poured stale cereal into a bowl and grabbed a small water bottle.
"I'll still shoot you," I plopped down in a seat in between Sasha and Rosita.
I saw Carl slightly smile at me from under his hat on the opposite side of the table. Not being able to fully see his eyes just made them that more intense. It made me want to kiss him. Jade, calm down with your freaking teenage hormones! It's too much! Do you need a glass, because you seem thirsty. I internally laughed at my own joke. I wish people had written a book on what to do with your "love life" in the zombie apocalypse. It would have made things so much easier for me...
