Over the next few days we drove until the sun set. Found a ton of gas and ended up sleeping in the car with Michonne on the roof keeping watch. It was the same for many days. I finished my books but now I had nothing to do. We listened to CD's were in houses and talked about the widest range of things. From Valentines Day movies to the old laws for drug use. Everyday we also changed who was in what car. Today Tara and I were in the pickup truck, driving in the middle of the minivans.
Tara's head kept drooping and she closed her eyes a lot. She hadn't slept at all last night since she insisted on taking watch all night. She was falling asleep at the wheel.
"Pull over," I said shakily, buckling my seatbelt. "Tara, pull over. Now." I thought she was pulling over because the car moved to the left, but soon I realized that she had actually fallen asleep.
"Tara! TARA WAKE UP!" I pulled her leg off of the gas pedal and attempted to move it to the break. All I did though was take her foot off the gas. Soon enough we both looked dead in the car because I knew that you were supposed to relax your muscles before a car crash. We were still probably going forty miles an hour when we hit the tree. A branch came in through the windshield and my head hit my window when my air bag ejected. Shit.
"Tara," I said quietly. For what felt like years I moved my arm over and put it on her shoulder. I started shaking her as much as I could. After a few hard shakes she woke up. I was getting more and more tired myself. She rubbed her eyes and looked at me. She screamed with such terror it made me wince.
"Jade! Oh my God, I'm so sorry." She started to cry. I felt something trickle down my forehead and into my mouth. Blood. That's why I was so tired.
"It's okay. It's okay. It's not your fault. You'rd a good person, Tara. If you all ever find my sister t-tell her I love her. Tara please stop crying," I felt more liquid trickle into my mouth but I realized it wasn't blood this time. It was my tears. "And please tell Carl that I think - I think I love him. That I do love him. Tara, it's okay. It's oka-" voices cut me off in the background.
Footsteps running to the car. My name was shouted from someone familiar. It was Carl, I think. I smiled as much as I could at the sound of his voice. The last I'll hear. I looked up and I could see the clouds from the opening in the roof. "No! NO!" Someone outside exclaimed. Doesn't count, my mind told me. I had no idea who it was. I didn't care either. I just wanted to sleep. See my family. I closed my eyes so they wouldn't have to and drifted into sleep, praying for Heaven.
