Chapter 5 ~ Egyptians in Gold

Percy Jackson

The worst guard duty slot you could possibly end up with was at the edge of the forest during the dawn hours. Not even a caffeinated ADHD demigod would stand a chance against the dryads here.

I leaned against one of the trees and used the glow from Riptide to keep in check of my surroundings. The cool summer breeze and the dryads whispering were doing nothing to help me stay awake and the last thing I wanted was to be found dozing off on guard duty.

Usually I was on guard duty at noon in Thalia's pine tree but I had to swap with Kristina because I lost a bet against her. In the twilight I could see the guards on the hill roaming around, checking for nearby monsters who located us. Once in a week or two, a cyclopes or a hell hound would wander here for prey but eventually get hunted down by the guard duty demigods.

The forest was a relatively peaceful place, considering the dryads and naiads constantly keeping their eyes on everything. That was when I heard a voice "Psst... Hey!"

I turned to the general direction of the voice which came from the forest. Maybe a Dryad trying to flirt... I went back to gazing at the climbing wall in the distance where the lava steadily flowed but the voice didn't stop "Hey!! Percy Jackson!"

I finally stood up and turned to the Dryad. She was about 15 feet away from me, wearing a green dress like her skin but her expression was etched with pure terror. She had wide eyes and was shaking from... fear?

I frowned as I recognized her... Grover's girlfriend; Juniper. She gestured wildly at the forest "Follow me... quickly!

It wasn't a good idea to leave my guard post but Juniper looked like something had ate her alive. I could call Annabeth for help but she was probably sleeping and if Grover was in trouble... it might be too late.

No other choices... I followed Juniper into the deeper part of the woods. Juniper was fast, she dodged through trees earning glares from her fellow dryads but she didn't stop. Only looking back occasionally to see if I was following, she ran ahead. Leaving me to do my best and follow her.e

The damp smell clung in the air and I could feel the eyes of the forest on me as I passed through the trees towards wherever Grover was. It was about 4 in the morning... a few hours before sunrise.

Then from somewhere, I caught a golden light coming through the trees. Instinctively I capped my sword to keep myself hidden as I approached. Juniper was nowhere to be seen, she had probably gone into hiding among the trees now that I reached my destination.

I recognized where Juniper had brought me. It was the battlefield... where the Battle of the Labyrinth happened back when I was a Freshman. A small clearing the size of a mall parking lot. This place was cursed as talked among the campers. The lives that ended here still haunt this place, it was bad luck to be here. But who would want to bring me here at this time of the day?

My answer was right in the middle of the clearing where a golden light was glowing. The Dryads in the trees whispered nervously as they watched the golden light. I hid in the shadows, trying to observe what was happening but as soon as I tried to hide, the golden light whispered "Percy Jackson, you're finally here."

Curse me and my skills for hiding. No wonder Annabeth says I always get caught at ambush attacks in Capture the Flag. I didn't step out but stayed hidden despite the golden light having noticed me "You can't hide from me, hero. Come out of the shadows."

The voice had threat and probably a little charm speak because without knowing, I stepped out into the clearing "Who are you?"

The golden light gave a laugh "I suppose this form won't do good..."

It shifted and glowed even more brightly that I had to shield my eyes to prevent myself from getting blinded. When it faded away, what was left in the place of the golden light was a Goddess. And, not a Greek one.

She wore white robes circled with Gold around the edges and her arms were adorned with gold bracelets while on her head was a Tiara, like a queen. And most stunningly, she had wings of rainbow. I may not be the best at Mythology but this lady had Egyptian written all over her face.

     I stuttered "You're not... Greek."

She gave a gentle laugh "Correct, I am Isis, the Egyptian Goddess of Magic."

"How did you get in Camp Half Blood. This place is seriously protected."

She made a swishing motion with her hand and hierogryphs danced in the air around her "I have my ways but that is not what's important."

She swiped the air behind her and a screen like an Iris message appeared. In it were images of a underworld like place swarming with demons "Chaos is weak but his children and followers are not. They are hungry for vengeance and they will come for Revenge. Even Gaea that is fast asleep has called for her children."

The hair on my arms stood up at the idea of having to face the Giants again... I turned to Isis "What do you want me to do?"

She swiped again and the image turned to that of an hourglass "You are the best chance the Demigods have in this war. You must find first the hourglass that ticks the time to the rise of Chaos' children."

Another quest? Isis continued "It is hidden in Manhattan, I can take you there right now."

She reached her hand out to me. Wait... No matter how endangered our world is again. I can't trust a random goddess that suddenly appears in the middle of the forest, telling me to go with her. Several things can go wrong.

I took a step back "Sorry, but my mom told me to not accept Quests from strangers."

A flash of annoyance passed her eyes but she remained calm "I understand you cannot trust me that easily, but you are not the only one in need of this hourglass, minions of chaos also seek to destroy it. There isn't much time left."

I hesitated. I always had Annabeth beside me for decisions like this... Alone, I felt doubtful of my on choices. Isis seemed to read my mind "If you don't take this chance, it will be too late and I cannot help you further. Also, you want to protect Annabeth, right?"

There was no going back... I turned back into the woods where several Dryads were watching me, anxious of my choice. The sun was staring to rise in the horizon... I turned back to Isis who still had her hand reached out to me.

At least I wouldn't be endangering Annabeth by leaving her in Camp Half Blood. I reached out and took Isis' hand.
