"If you're needing
A soul-to-soul connection
I'll run to your side..."
-From Homeless Heart sung by Jeanette McCurdyWorking at the mini-mart during the summer, especially on the first day, was the longest six hours of Amy's life; the endless cycle of working behind the counter, doing check-out, sweeping the floors, stocking shelves, and mopping the restrooms. The only upside was getting a hotdog during break, a popsicle or ice cream on the way home, and getting home to watch some TV before the news came on.
It was during the low time during the day; very few customers. She was debating sneaking to the magazine rack and checking out the new comic books when she saw a familiar face.
"Jeff! Hi!"
The young man lifted his head and turned. He and Amy had been in school together for a long time, but had been nothing more than classmates. Jeff had not been out lately; not since what happened to his father.
"Oh, hi Amy."
"Are you doing anything tonight? Laura's driving me nuts and I have to get out of the house."
"I have to work at the garage tonight, but I have tomorrow off."
"Me too! How about a movie? They're showing Sleeping Beauty and The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad at the cinema."
"Sounds fun. I'll pick you up tomorrow at five, ok?"
"OK with me!"
Jeff brought his items to check out. Among them; a bottle of sleeping pills. He must have seen the look on Amy's face.
"For my mom." He said defensively.
Jeff paid for his things and left. Amy watched from the window as he rode his motorcycle down the street. For the rest of the day Amy wondered how Jeff really was handling his father's death.
