Mary had been back for several months by now, and much to Dean's disappointment, she was still overly wary of Cas. It's not that she didn't necessarily trust him, it's just that she had heard stories about other angels. You know, the usual brand of dick bags. Dean had told her time and time again that Cas was different, and alway, he got the same response. A taut, indulgent smile and a nod of the head. Sam insisted that she just needed time, but it had been months after all, and nothing had changed yet. Finally, having had enough, Dean decided to do something to change his mother's mind regarding his best friend. He'd find them a hunt.

At first, Mary had been skeptical, not really understanding why Sam or Dean couldn't go with her instead, or as well as. It took a fair amount of convincing on Sam's part, and Dean offering up his beloved Impala for them to take, before she broke down and agreed. Castiel was equally confused about the arrangements, but all Dean really had to do was ask and the angel agreed. So, after a quick goodbye, and a promise to check in with the two brothers, Mary and Castiel climbed into the car and took off for Nebraska.

The drive is awkward to say the least. Mary honestly doesn't really know what to say to the angel, and Cas never really understood the point of small talk, or the finer details on how to make it work without being awkward. Normally, he'd be happy to sit in silence until something necessary came up that was important enough to pass along verbally. The tense atmosphere is finally broken by Mary after they stop to fuel up the car.

"So, Cas, you seem quite close with my boys." Cas gets a fond smile on his face as he nods, which doesn't escape Mary's notice.

"Yes. I have known them for several years now. They are two of the best men that I've ever met." Cas looks earnestly at the blonde behind the wheel to make sure that she knows how sincerely he means that statement. "I have made many mistakes since I've met them, and they forgive every one. Even the ones I haven't forgiven myself for. I owe them everything."

Mary smiles, that special smile that parents get when someone praises their kids, or acknowledges how truly good they are. However, this is just the start of the conversation she wants to have with the angel. She just has to figure out a way to casually bring up what she wants to, while also being clear enough so as not to confuse him.

"They have grown into two very good men. They deserve better than what they've been given." Mary agrees, Cas nodding along to her words in her peripheral vision. "They have both sacrificed so damn much. They deserve to be happy."

Mary chances a quick look beside her at Cas, only to find him thoughtfully staring out the windshield. The next few minutes pass in silence, but it's not as tense as before. If anything, it almost feels like the calm before the storm.

"What is it that would make them happy?" Cas finally asks, turning questioning eyes on Mary. She takes in a breath, chewing gently on her bottom lip as she thinks. It's a habit that Dean clearly got from his mother, as he does the same thing all the time.

"Well," she says slowly, "that's hard to say. I know both of them want the world to be a better place. To be safe and free of monsters. I think sometimes Sam still wishes that he could've had that normal life, no matter how much he's accepted the one he has now. Dean can be a little harder to figure out. He's nothing like the little boy I left behind. He hides his true feelings and desires to avoid getting hurt. However, what I think Dean really wants is love."

Cas narrows his eyes in confusion as he tries to understand Mary's words. Dean is surrounded by people who love him. Sam, his mother, himself, Jody, Donna, Claire. There are many people out there who care for Dean a great deal. He opens his mouth to inform her of this, not sure why she has never noticed it herself, but she cuts him off with a soft chuckle.
