Dean Winchester doesn't date. He doesn't do relationships, or feelings, and he certainly doesn't do 'I love you's. So you can imagine his surprise when his brother informed him that he had, in fact, been dating his angel best friend for the past four months. At this, Dean had whipped around to face Cas and demanded to know if Sam was correct. Cas had remained expressionless as he shrugged and replied, "I didn't know how to bring it up in conversation." At that, he had left the library in the bunker, to no doubt go to the room he had taken over. Dean had then rounded on Sam, asking him for answers instead. All he got was his younger brother's classic 'I'm done with your shit, Dean' look and a clipped, "Think about it. I'm sure you'll figure it out." Then, he was all by himself.
Sinking into a chair, he reached up both hands to furiously scrub at his face. In his mind, relationships were all about lovey-dovey crap. Being all romantic, and going on dates, and kissing sweetly at the most inappropriate times. He never did any of that with Cas. However, the longer he sat there, tugging on his hair in frustration, the more he realized that him and Cas had grown a lot closer over the last few months. The longer he focused on that, the more he was able to pinpoint exactly when things seemed to change.
It had all started with that damned witch. 'Bloody witches.' He thinks to himself sulkily. The three of them had tracked her out to a cabin in the middle of a forest that was next to some town located in the middle of nowhere. Dean and Cas has gone in through the front, while Sam went around to come at her from behind. The minute the two had stepped inside, gun and angel blade at the ready, the witch had blasted Cas with some powerful anti-angel spell that had sent him flying out the window next to the front door. Not only that, but it had muted his grace. Now, the powerhouse "big gun" that they had brought was an unconscious lump outside by a thick stand of trees.
Without the angel's help, it had taken Sam and Dean a little longer to dispose of the witch, but after a gruelling fight the two brothers took her out. Dean was just picking himself up off the floor, pushing the remnants of the table she had crashed over him off, when Cas stumbled back in through the front door. He had an obvious limp, and was wincing every time he moved. He had a few cuts on his hands and face from crashing through the glass window, but nothing too serious that would require stitches.
"Nice of you to join us, Cas." Dean had griped, earning a glare from his brother. He looked back, trying to appear as innocent as possible, and merely got an eye roll before Sam hurried forward to help their friend.
"My apologies. I'm not sure what she hit me with, but it appears to still be having an effect on my grace. I am unable to heal myself yet." Cas replied with a frown marring his features. He shot Sam an appreciative smile, or tried to at least, as the younger Winchester settled an arm around his lower back to help steady him. Dean had frowned at that, though he couldn't really figure out why it had bothered him.
"That's fine, Cas." Sam has reassured. "Let's get you back to the motel." Dean got to his feet, grumbling about how he hadn't gotten any help, while Sam half carried the angel out to the Impala. Despite wanting to make a snarky comment when he finally joined the other two out at the car, he managed to hold his tongue. He slid behind the wheel and started the engine, pausing to glance briefly at Cas, sprawled across the backseat, in the rear view mirror before putting the vehicle in drive and heading back toward town.
When they had reached their motel, he had made sure that he hopped out of the car first so he could get to Cas before Sam could. Cas had given him a grateful smile when he had opened the door and helped pull him out and onto his feet. Sam's raised eyebrows had gone ignored.
