It was not long after the Doctor had stared into the untempered schism, that Y/N was called away. It was announced that all familiars had to go through training to use their abilities, how to travel through time without a capsule and how to best protect their timelord. The pair were devastated that they would have to be apart, the Doctor fighting with everything he had to keep Y/N with him but the council would not allow it until Y/N had completed training. The Doctors feelings had started to flow through the telepathic bond they shared, Y/N noticing his desire to leave Gallifrey and explore the universe. Y/N did not want to leave the Doctor, but knew that training would help him further protect the Doctor, so he left. He left a parting gift to the Doctor. A gift to keep the Doctor busy and distracted until Y/N returned.
Y/N left a TARDIS.
Y/N sat staring out of the cell window in their wolf form, whimpers leaving them as they watched Daleks decent from the sky.
Once the council had found out that Y/N had stolen a TARDIS, they were immediately locked up, waiting for the day their Doctor would return for them.
The Doctors scent filled their nose, Y/N jumped up worried. The Doctor was out there, in the middle of a war zone. The sudden determination, the instinct to protect him filled Y/N, their body jerking as they changed form, their wolf from expanding to an impossible size, the walls of their cell crumbling around them. Leaping from the now broken wall, Y/N landed harshly on their feet, stumbling at the impact before reverting to their normal size. Taking off in a sprint, they allowed their sense of smell to lead the way, bounding past Daleks and explosions, determined to get to their Doctor.
Snarling, they caught sight of the Doctor being held at gun point by a Dalek. He was an old man, having regenerated since the last time Y/N had seen him, but they would recognise him anywhere. Crashing into the Daleks side, Y/N bit down on the armor surrounding it, trying to find a weak spot.
"EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!" The Dalek fired shots blindly, trying to get the wolf of it.
The Doctor's eyes widened at seeing Y/N, hurrying to grab a soldiers discarded gun. A painful whimper caused him to spin around panicked, seeing one of the stray shots hit Y/N in the side. He fired at the Dalek, destroying it before running to Y/N's side. The whole right side of their fur was burnt ,a huge wound from the Dalek's powerful shot. Raising a shaky hand to their wound, he inspected it with worry before stroking the fur on their head.
"Y/N."
"Theta. You came back." Y/N whimpered, the voice in the Doctors head weak.
"Of course I came back, I'd never leave you Y/N." Tears filled his eyes as he saw the state of their wound, he knew he couldn't fix that. He almost laughed bitterly, he chose the name Doctor and he couldn't even heal the one being that meant the most to him.
"I protected Theta." Y/N's weakly leaned their head into his touch, a mix between a whimper and a purr leaving them.
"Yes. Yes you did. You saved me." At his words, Y/N sighed happily, their eyes fluttering shut.
"Y/N? Y/N?!" The Doctor shook Y/N, his eyes wide as tears ran down his aged face.
He got no response.
Feeling his hearts break, he angrily gripped the gun in his hand, he would end this war. He would end this war of death and sadness. He would end the war that took Y/N from him.
For Y/N.
