He slowly wraps his arms around my waist, taking a moment to realize what's going on.
"Ky, look at me." He says, pulling back to try and look at my face, but I keep mine buried in his shoulder. "Kya." he says again, making me look up. "Just breathe. In through your nose, out through your mouth."
"I can't!" I snap, my lungs contracting and making my heart beat faster. I look over his shoulder and see Tyler looking at us worriedly while Debby talks to Josh. Josh nods along understandingly.
"Kya, it's okay." Danny says. I notice Josh start inching over, Debby heading back to our cabin group. "Just calm down." Danny says, clearly not knowing what to do. I bury my face back in his shoulder, feeling him sigh. He knows he isn't helping.
"Here, let's go somewhere less crowded." I hear Josh's voice say. I look up to see him beckoning us o follow him with knowing eyes. Everyone is filing into the auditorium, and I know they're probably wondering why were over here, but I can't find the energy to care. I shake my head, feeling my entire body shake as well. I don't want Josh to see more than he already has.
"Kya, Its okay. He can help more than I can." Danny tells me. "I hate seeing you like this and not being able to do anything." I cave at his words, choking back tears and nodding my head. I'm able to ignore the fact that I can't breathe until Josh leads us into the main building and into a lounge-type room. Once the door is closed, it seems something clicks in my brain, and I'm immediately wheezing, my lungs gasping for air.
"Look Kya," Josh says, kneeling in front of me and stopping me from pacing. "I know it doesn't feel like it right now, but you're okay. It's all going to be okay, you just have to breathe."
" I can't!" I choke out.
"Yes you can, just try with me okay?" he instructs. "Look. Slow, deep breaths, sweetheart." He says, doing exactly so himself. "We can't have you passing out on us." It takes him saying that for me to realize I'm dizzy. I'm still shaking violently, I honestly don't know how I'm still standing. Josh gently pushes me backwards and I quickly latch on to his arms, not knowing what he's doing.
"You're okay." he nods, meeting my panicked eyes and pushing me further back onto the couch I hadn't noticed was there. "I've got you." He reminds me.
"Danny." I say, my voice cracking as I frantically look around the room for him.
"He's right here." Josh says as Danny sits next to me. I instantly lean into him, letting him loosely wrap his arm around my shoulders. "See? You're okay. Its okay." Josh repeats, still crouching in front of us. Eventually I start to feel my breath come back to me, but I'm still on edge and shaking uncontrollably. "So, what do you like to do?" Josh asks, trying to distract me.
"Music." I'm able to answer after quite a bit of formulating, and with a bouncing knee.
"What about music?" He prods.
"A-anything. Listening, playing, w-writing."
"Why don't we get you some music going then? You have your headphones?" I nod, pulling out my phone and letting the music do its job to calm me down. "What are you listening to?" I show him my phone screen and he nods. " I love that band." He smiles.
"Me too." I squeak out, happy that someone else knows who they are- no one ever does. He talks to me about music for a good while, distracting me enough to get my breathing back to normal and being patient with my stuttering.
Getting my breathing back to normal is the only thing that happens though. I'm completely and utterly drained. I'm practically falling asleep right here and now. Josh must see me dozing
Ffm because he places his hand on my knee.
"Kya, you need to stay awake." He tells me. I whine, burying my face in Danny's shoulder. "I know, but you just have to stay awake for a little longer. Were just gonna go back to your cabin, okay?" At first, I'm all for the idea, but then I remember the dirty looks that the other girls were giving me earlier. As my brain starts to connect the dots, I realize that this probably won't be a night I sleep soundly either. There's no way I can sleep in my cabin tonight.
"No." I mutter, my mind racing with all of the things that could, and are, going wrong.
"Why not?" Josh asks. To that I stay silent. I know he knows, but I still don't want to say it. I feel Danny moving, but I keep my eyes closed. "Okay, let's go for a walk." Josh continues. "I've got an idea."
