Once everyone had finished their breakfast Jackie had told the girls to go upstairs and get changed. Margaret was still slightly shaken after the news the morning had brought. Her hands were shaking by her sides and all she could do was press them against her hips and hope nobody noticed.
She wondered why nobody had commented on her quote on quote weird attire as the boy in the bodysuit had. Maybe it was not as unusual as he had made it out to be. The girl had no clothes with her obviously but apparently, there was bound to spare somewhere, that's what Jane had told her anyway.
"So what are you planning on doing?" Abby Ross asked curiously. "Like if you ever get outta this place or otherwise?"
"Oh, I don't know, uh go to school?" Margaret knew her intentions of by heart but they were not for sharing at that moment. Like she had told herself, she was going to find some relatives somewhere and stay with them for a bit until she figured out a way to get home.
"Oh me too, We all have our plans set out," She told her. "Margot and I want to try and get into midtown this year you could apply with us but we've been trying to get in for a year now so you might be slightly late for applications"
"Hmm yeah" she wasn't really listening but maybe schooling wasn't a bad idea. Though the actual process was rather rigorous.
They had reached the top of the staircase and began to head for their room continuing with their conversations about their futures.
"Well, I want to find I boyfriend before I turn fifteen" Meabh said looking around at the four uninterested faces around her. "Carters says she had her first kiss at thirteen"
Carter was a burly black haired seventeen year old whom Margaret had met a breakfast, Meabh and her were obviously good friends. They had talked nonstop for the majority of the breakfast about the "earthquake".
Last but not least to share was Jane. "I dunno what I want, maybe for us to not get separated?"
Margaret liked her answer the best though there was no right or wrong one, it was true to Abby's heart. She knew that the girl had not meant to include her in the 'us' part of her answer, it wasn't unreasonable, they had only met this morning.
Abby opened the door and in they walked to the room same as they'd left it. Their wardrobe was wide open and instead of searching for clothes Jane and Margot decided to share an outfit with the redhead as their body shapes were most similar.
When finished they all headed downstairs and into the kitchen/living room that had been converted for more space. The double doors that had been closed over during breakfast were now wide open and revealed was a bright open space filled with colourful bean bags and a large Tv sat on the wall.
Margaret wondered what it was but said nothing taking a seat on one of the many seating options. Somebody turned it on with a remote and switched it onto some cartoons that everybody could watch, young and old.
Though confused by the contraption she enjoyed the string of movement that was presented to her eyes. A sudden change in static caused everybody to jump in surprise. The Tom and Jerry marathon that had been playing was instead changed to a channel with a bright blue strip across the bottom with bright letters saying BREAKING NEW over and over again.
A woman sat at a desk upon the screen and began to read in the typical way a newsreader would read. "Reports of an unexpected and unexplained earthquake taking place in downtown queens are false"
Everyone at the table was lashed with confusion at the news, they had all felt it, every single one of them. Margaret hands began to shake rapidly at her side just like they had been all through the Marathon but now at an increased rate. Had she been found out?
The newsreader continued.
"Experts have recorded loud high-frequency waves that have been washing through the city since late last night. It is said they cannot pinpoint exactly where it's coming from but it's known from one original source. If the source is found it can be eradicated before further damage is caused. if you have seen, heard or felt anything odd or off please contact either this news station or one of the many 911 operating lines open 24/7"
"Oh well that was extremely helpful"
The room went silent after a random boy had commented his sarcastic remark. The silence was a silence of panic and disbelief, not just on Margaret's behalf. odd things happened very often on the news these days, for instance, only last year Tony stark, a famous billionaire, accidentally created an antilife robot and defeated it with the help of the avengers.
The reason it had really made everyone go silent was because they were scared. What if it was another attack like the battle in 2012 of the many riots started by the hulk.
But nobody's, not one soul in that room could compare to the terror that was arousing in the pit of Maggie's stomach. What was she supposed to do? She had left those guys that had attempted to mug her in the alley after they had witnessed the event first hand. She was going to get found out and nothing was going to get better.
And what if she was already found out? What if the guys had gone to the police or that place and told them all about her abilities.
"Margaret are you alright you look really pale," said Margot
"Yeah, yes I'm fine" she mumbled back, but she was probably the furthest thing from fine. Abby, Meabh and Jane turned to face her as Margot put her hand to the redhead's forehead.
"Your burning u-"
Everything went fuzzy. Her vision, her hearing, her senses. Quick flashes came and went like sweet memory's that were once there clear as day but now slightly forgotten until randomly brought up by the mind when is wanting somebody to annoy.
A long black expensive-looking car, the quick flash of red and blue and a chunk of metal hitting the ground at a rapid speed.
Her eyes gained focus and she could hear again. What the hell had just happened. She had fallen off her bean bag and everybody in the room was looking at her like she was insane. Maybe she was.
"I-I need to go upstairs"
"Good idea"
~authors not~
I actually have no life whatsoever but ah well. To be clear Margaret is fourteen and so are the other girls. 🤘I was crying while writing this chapter, not because it's sad but because I was nearing the end of reading the outsiders for my English class lmao. Does anyone like actually like that book apart from me?
Anyway, there'll probably be another chapter soon because life is meaningless and homework doesn't matter.
Byeeeeeee.
