tony sits by the side of your bed, gazing at you fondly, your newborn son cradled gently in his arms. his face holds a look of pure wonder and adoration. there were times when tony looked at you – your wedding day, when you told him you were pregnant – when you felt like his gaze held all the love in the world. none of those times could even compare to the love with which he gazes at your son. his strong arms are holding the fragile infant close against his chest, his grip secure and strong, yet so gentle it almost seems hesitant.

you chuckle tiredly as he coos at your son softly, gently stroking the small tuft of brown hair on his head. that got tony's attention. he turns to you, leaning over so he can place a soft kiss on your lips. "what are you still doing awake? you should be asleep, y/n. you've had a long day."

"i was just watching my boys. how can i sleep when you two are so cute?" you smile softly, yawning slightly and pulling the blankets closer. the movement makes your tired muscles protest and you wince, which tony notices right away.

"and we'll be just as cute when you wake up. for now, get some rest. and don't even try to hide how tired and sore you are, babe. i saw you wince," tony's voice is stern but full of affection.

you yawn again, nodding as your eyes slowly drift shut. "okay, okay. but only because you're too hardheaded for your own good, stark."

"if there's anything i learned from being married to you, love, it's that you're just as stubborn as i am, mrs. stark. now go to sleep."

he doesn't have to tell you twice. within minutes, you're out like a light, leaving tony and your son to bond. tony smiles, his gaze fixated on the tiny bundle of blankets resting in his arms. he has never seen anything more perfect in his life. this tiny creature with its waving fists and curious brown eyes has changed his entire life.

"i'm gonna take good care of you, kid. that much i can promise you. nothing bad is ever going to happen to you, or your momma. not on my watch. and you've got a whole family who loves you. there's aunt wanda, aunt nat, uncle thor, uncle bruce, uncle clint, uncle sam..." tony trails off slightly before smiling, "even uncle steve. sometimes families argue, you'll learn that. but it doesn't mean that they don't care about each other."

your son blinks once then wiggles slightly in tony's arms before settling down again at the sound of his father's heartbeat. "i'm gonna give you everything, buddy. you want to go to college for theater? you got it. or maybe you'll want to take a few years off and travel, go see the world. well, your mom might insist on going with you, but if it makes you happy, i'll make it happen." he sighs, pausing for a few moments before carefully choosing his next words. your son can't understand a word that was being said, but tony feels the need to get it all out.

"you won't be able to meet your grandpa, kiddo, but he was a brilliant man. he and uncle steve go way back. yeah, your uncle is so old that he knew my dad when he was young. make sure you tease him about that, okay kid? oh, and you can call him capsicle. that probably doesn't make sense to you now, but that's a story for another day. he'll pretend to be annoyed, but he's a softie..." your son lets out a gurgle that almost sounds like laughter, making tony chuckle.

"that's the spirit. you see, buddy, my dad and i didn't have the best relationship. the way things ended between us, well...that's something that i have to live with for the rest of my life. i can't change what happened back then. i can't change how things ended between us. but i can do right by you. i'm going to do everything i can to be the best dad to you – hell, your momma will kick my ass if i'm not. we're going to be a team. a family. i won't let anything get in the way. not now, not ever."

the baby in his arms yawns, his eyes drifting closed as his father's voice lulls him to sleep. tony chuckles and kisses his forehead, gently placing him in the crib next to your bed before gently laying down beside you, keeping a careful eye on your son.

"i regret a lot of things in my life, kid, but i know that i'll never regret you."
