The sun shone brightly in the mid afternoon,

But I sat under a tree for shade.

The long branches extended out,

Covering me from the rays of the sun.

As the gentle breeze blew, I felt a soft touch on my leg.

The tiny leaf tumbled over me,

Letting the breeze take it wherever it wished.

A seemingly never ending journey.

I felt bad for the lonely figure,

Because once the breeze had enough,

It would be left alone to wilt.

But the tiny child did not know that,

Instead it rode on the back of the breeze.

Joyfully bouncing up and down.

I wondered who left this leaf alone,

Surely it had other companions.

But when I had taken my eye from the leaf, it was gone.

I left the protective cover of shade,

In hopes of finding this little leaf.

The green figure shined brightly in the afternoon sun,

Almost like it was smiling.

And then I realized what it was smiling at.

As I stood next to the little leaf and looked up,

And to my amazement, they were smiling back.

The breeze gracefully swirled around the tree,

Encouraging the them.

They began to dance to the simple rhythm of the air.

With graceful movements, each seemed in uncanny unison.

The bright smile never leaving.

For the little leaf beside me had rebelled,

Leaving the safety of the tree.

And it's companions knew it had succeeded.

Needing no more encouragement, they allowed themselves

To turn the most beautiful colors,

Catching the eye of all,

As they allowed the breeze to help them down,

And decorated the world,

With their beautiful smiles.
