eddie sat at the top of the stairs, holding onto his stuffed koala as his sister had her arms wrapped around him. they watched as their parents fought, their mom standing as still as a statue and their father yelling loudly.

they both jumped as the loud sound of a smack echoed throughout the house, watching as their mom stumbled back. eddie hadn't even noticed he was crying until cassidy wiped away his tears.

"wanna sleep in my room?" she whispered, to which eddie shook his head. "i think i'm gonna go to the park- i dunno." he shrugged, getting up then walking back to his room.

"well don't be too long, father will be up your ass if you aren't up early tomorrow." she spoke, following the boy to his room and standing by his door frame.

eddie raised his eyebrows, turning towards his sister. "why?" he asked, opening his window then swinging a rolled up ladder out the window. their mother insisted in every bedroom to have ladders by the windows incase of a fire.

"he's bringing his friends at his work over for breakfast, i met them once when i went to his work with him a few years ago. they seem pretty sketchy." she shrugged, crossing her arms.

eddie sighed, shaking his head head. "i'll be back soon, i'll only be gone for like thirty minutes." he grabbed his backpack then made his way down the ladder very carefully, before grabbing his walkman out of his bag.

he put on his headphones, africa by toto playing as he walked to the park. he looked at the drying rain puddles on the street, light reflecting off of it.

eddie then walked over to the playground as he sat down on the opening of the money bars, putting his head in his hands.

the kaspbraks all sat at the dinner table, it being much bigger to hold more than their small family. eddie anxiously fiddled with his hands as he could practically feel his fathers stare burning into the side of his head. "edward." his father spoke up, causing eddie to go stiff. "where were you last night?" eddie looked down, making sure not to make eye contact with his dad. "i went to the park." he spoke, his voice being quiet and full of fear. his father then slammed his fist on the table, causing eddie to jump back and look up at his dad. "are you fucking serious?" he then grabbed the burning cigarette from this lips, walking over to his son. "maybe this'll make you actually start listening to my rules, yeah?" he said before grabbing eddies small arm, putting the burning cigarette against his soft skin, making the boy cry out in pain.

eddie then jumped as he felt a hand on his knee, looking up to meet the big brown eyes and pale face he met a few days ago. richie.

"sorry-" he said, feeling bad for making the boy jump. "are you okay? what's wrong?" he asked, causing eddie to look down. he realized that he was shaking, and crying to the point where he could hardly breathe.

"i-i'm fine." his voice cracked, before wiping his tears with the back of his hand. "bullshit. you wouldn't be crying if you were fine." richie grabbed the money bars, pulling himself up then sitting next to eddie. "what's wrong?"

eddie sighed, looking down. "i just- family stuff. i don't wanna talk about it." richie just nodded, reaching into his pocked and grabbing something folded up in what looked like a gum wrapper.

"what's-"

"shh." richie said, giving eddie a shit eating grin. he then unfolded the wrapper, looking back up at eddie. "want to?"

"is that acid?" eddie asked, turning towards richie then crossing his legs. "mhm." richie hummed, causing eddie to shrug.

"i don't know- i've never done drugs richie. i've never even smoked." richie smiled, copying what eddie did and facing towards him. "it'll be fun, cmon, it's harmless."

fuck it.

eddie grabbed one of the squares, putting it on his tongue then watching richie do the same. "how long until it kicks in?" eddie asked, to which richie shrugged.

"just depends, twenty minutes to an hour." he said, swallowing the square with a smiley face on it.

"and how long does it last?" eddie asked, causing richie to grin as he leaned his head back. "like, twelve hours."

"what? fuck! richie- no. it can't last that long- i have to have breakfast and shit with my dads co workers. oh my god richie- i'm dead! i'm gonna actually get killed!"

"hey- hey- you'll be alright. okay? maybe you can like invite me or some shit and i'll distract you or- i don't know? but you can't go into the trip acting like this. come with me." richie said, climbing off the jungle gym then picking up eddie and putting him down.

"i could've gotten down myself." eddie rolled his eyes and crossed his arms, causing richie to grin. "stop complaining, come with me." richie said, making his way to his house.

.

once the two boys were at richie's house, the taller one threw open the door and grinned. "welcome to my humble abode!" richie smiled, shutting the door behind eddie then turning to him. "wait here-" he said before running upstairs.

eddie looked around the messy house, but before he knew it richie was running down the stairs with a radio.

"you want a cigarette? or beer?" richie asked, turning on the radio to some song eddie didn't know, but richie seemed to like.

"cigarettes are cancer sticks." eddie said, crossing his arms. richie then laughed, taking a pack of cigarettes out of his pocket. "true true- but who gives a fuck!" he grinned, before lighting it and placing it between his lips.

eddie rolled his eyes but giggled. "who sings this?" eddie asked, climbing onto the counter next to the radio.

"nirvana, don't know how i feel about them yet." he shrugged, "well, i guess they're good." he laughed.

richie's trip then started slightly kicking in. colors started becoming more bright, small sounds started being more apparent, he felt dizzy as he walked around the living room and kitchen looking at everything, laughing before looking at eddie.

"is it working yet?" richie asked, walking over to eddie who shook his head. "no, not yet." richie huffed, before turning his head at a sound.

"rich, hey! come here!" eddie giggled, almost falling off the counter. he went over to richie then grabbed his face in his hands, standing as tall as he could on his tip toes. "your pupils are so big!"

"so are yours!" richie laughed, also putting his hands on the boys cheeks. "wow." he mumbled, causing eddie to furrow his eyebrows. "huh?"

"life is like a fatass nut right now."

eddie grinned, giggling then punching richie's arm slightly. "shut upppp!" he dragged out. "i wanna draw. do you have glitter?" richie shook his head.

"why the hell would i have glitter?" he laughed, throwing an arm around around the smaller boy. eddie giggled, grabbing richie's hand then pulling him to the front door. "i want to go to my house- i have glitter!" eddie laughed.

"hold on." richie then turned around, grabbing his backpack then giving eddie his own. "lead the way spaghetti!"
